Somewhere 'New York'

My boyf and I are coming to New York on 30th December for 4 days. We have planned what we%26#39;re going to do for most of the trip - we just have 1 evening left to sort out.

We are doing quite a few %26#39;romantic%26#39; things while we%26#39;re there (i.e. dinner at River Cafe etc) however we have one night when we haven%26#39;t got anything planned and we want to go somewhere we%26#39;ll really feel like we%26#39;re in New York. We don%26#39;t want anything to posh - maybe somewhere we can eat huge hamburgers, drink cocktails etc - somewhere that%26#39;s a bit fun and loud (and not TGI Friday as there are plenty of them in London). Can anyone suggest any restaurants that you think would be suitable??? What is Chinatown like in the evening?

Chinatown is fine in the evening, but I%26#39;m not sure it feels so ';NY'; vs. a chinatown in any other city.

For a huge burger maybe go to the village. Julius is a place some of the posters on this forum met up for some good burgers and beer. The Corner Bistro is another place in the village known for their burgers. Both are casual and inexpensive. The Old Town Bar is another.

Maybe a comedy club after or a piano bar. Cafe Wha is another idea.

I was just thinking of Old Town bar, too! That is very NYC.

However, over and above Old Town, I would place Pete%26#39;s Tavern. Classic. Beautiful streets nearby, too.

Old Town is a great place, one of my favorites. Another option for great pub burgers is Corner Bistro located at 331 W. 4th the West Village. Great burgers and cheap beer prices! Can%26#39;t be beat. Last time I was there I sat next to Clive Owen at the bar who was hanging out by himself and enjoying a burger and beer.

Oh I forgot to mention that after going to Corner Bistro, just head out on Hudson Street and make sure you hit the White Horse Tavern. Another one of the old NYC original bars. This was made famous by Bob Dylan who spent some time there drinking and writing his music back in the 60s.

I was going to mention White Horse Tavern, but it always seems really dreary and greezy in the back. I guess that%26#39;s part of the charm!

p.s. Since Dylan Thomas drank the last drink of hs life there, is that why Bob Dylan named himself after the poet?

';The Scottish poet Ruthven Todd introduced Dylan Thomas to the bar, and the great Welsh bard was soon quaffing oceans of ale in the Horse%26#39;s back room. Thomas made the place his headquarters on his tumultuous stateside forays, and soon tourists were lining up eight deep at the bar to watch him carouse. Today a plaque on the wall commemorates the November night in 1953 when the poet, still only 39, downed one last shot, staggered outside and collapsed. After falling into a coma at the nearby Chelsea Hotel, he was whisked to St. Vincent%26#39;s Hospital where he died.';

Thanks so much for all of your advice.

I really don%26#39;t know what I%26#39;d do without this website.
