Cheese Enquiry

Have just returned from a trip to New York. I had been hoping to buy some philadelphia strawberry flavour or any flavour for that matter but not successful. Tried several good food shops but no luck. Hope to return to New York soon. Does anyone know where I can buy flavoured philly. Thanks in anticipation.

Maybe because this isn%26#39;t considered a ';gourmet'; food but is in fact quite ordinary - any regular market should carry it. You do mean Kraft Philadelphia Cream cheese with Strawberry, right? Comes in a tub, to spread on bagels or whatever?

Also, for hand mixed cream cheese, most bagel shops mix a variety of flavors of their own - there%26#39;s one on 6th Avenue, just a few doors north of 8th Street that mixes several varieties - walnut, fruit, etc.

I can buy flavored philly in my local supermarket. My personal favorite is the salmon one! yum....

I agree that your problem was looking in fancy/gourmet stores instead of a regular, but good sized supermarket. The strawberry flavor seems to come only in ';light'; spread cream cheese. Food Emporium is a chain that carries it and is all over town. If you know the zip code of your hotel, you can put it in on the Food Emporium website and find the nearest store.

If you just want flavored cream cheese, they sell it freshly made at many of the good bagel places or gourmet shops. Ess-A-Bagel and Eli%26#39;s Vinegar Factory are very good.

In the 1940%26#39;s Chock Full of Nuts opened a couple of stores in NYC that featured a cream cheese sandwich that had nuts (walnuts?) mixed in with the cream cheese. Loved that sandwich.

If flavoured philly is available in supermarkets, is French, English and Irish cheese available in gourmet shops in New York ? Or do Americans tend to consume cheeses made in the U.S. and leave other cheeses out of the equation ?

You can get French-made brie and Greek-made feta et al. in regualr supermarkets in NYC. You can also get REALLY GOOD French-made brie and Greek-made feta in gourmeet stores for a lot more money. ;o)

This thread reminds me of when I tried to find Maltesers in specialty stores in London because I didn%26#39;t know they were available everywhere. (I first read about them in a Graham Greene novel and the character described them wistfully as if they were rare and precious.)

Thanks for the info QB. As regards Graham Greene novels, most interesting thing for me, as a fanatical filmgoer, is that Apocalypse Now was based on Heart of Darkness.

Sorry QB, Heart of Darkness was by Conrad not Greene. Delete that last thought of mine in my last post.

rqf, I think the sandwich you%26#39;re thinking of was the date n%26#39; nut bread with cream cheese. Actually the nuts were in the bread, not the cheese. ;) I loved that sandwich and it%26#39;s one of those wonderful taste memories...my Nana used to really love that sandwich (and I adored her). We would go to Orbach%26#39;s shopping and then have either Horn %26amp; Hardart%26#39;s or a Chock Full O Nuts date n%26#39; nut bread sand. ;)

Insightful, NYers in particular are very into their cheeses. You%26#39;ll find French, Italian, Holland, Switzerland etc. Murray%26#39;s Cheese shop is one of the best. Here%26#39;s their website so you can see what%26#39;s available.
