Restaurants and pubs Upper West Side

Hi

We%26#39;ll be staying at the Belleclair Hotel, West 76th/Broadway at the end of this month. Any tips for eating out in that locality? Or any info on the area in general would be appreciated.

I liked Aix....

I love this area and have stayed here a few times. Try this site

(http://www.nysite.com/mergeog.htm) and it%26#39;ll show you what%26#39;s where. As it%26#39;s a residential area, there are loads of ';ordinary'; places that people need for day to day. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants as well as bookstores, petshops etc. A favourite shop of mine is Ivy%26#39;s Books which is on Broadway between 92/93rd, a walk from you but well worth it. Also, there%26#39;s a great deli called Arties on Broadway and 83rd which has a great menu and friendly staff.

For lunch, try the upstairs cafe at Fairway Market on Bwy and 75th. Not the fanciest but the food is excellent. Love the chicken soup on a cold day.

Some favorites in the neighborhood, in no particular order:

Telepan

Isabella%26#39;s

Ocean Grill

City Grill

Pasha

Penang

Hunan Park

EJ%26#39;s Luncheonette

Edgar%26#39;s

Caridad (for the Cuban, not the Chinese)

Gray%26#39;s Papaya

Ouest (I%26#39;ve never been but hear great things)

Go to menupages.com for reviews and to see sample menus (with outdated prices though).

There%26#39;s a weekly flea market (every Sunday) in the public school yard at Columbus and 77th. Not just used stuff, either. Great for Christmas stocking stuffers and lots of fun stuff.

A fantastic area - Just to add a few restaurants that I like not previously mentioned:

Cafe Lalo - 83rd btwn Amsterdam/Broadway

Sarabeth%26#39;s Amsterdam/80th

Popover Cafe Amsterdam/86th

Arte Cafe 73rd btwn Columbus/Amsterdam

Rain - 83rd btwn Columbus/Amsterdam

Alice%26#39;s Teacup 73rd btwn Columbus/Amsterdam

Many, many more wonderful restaurants in the area.

If you go to the ';overview'; page for NYC, scroll down to the ';dining overview';. In that section, you will find a write-up on Upper West Side restaurants that was written by NYC10025.

Wow. I%26#39;m amazed at your knowledge of New York City, Bettina.

I know this isn%26#39;t the thread for it, but I%26#39;d love to know how you came to know so much about the city.

Were you a concierge in a previous life? :)

Thanks for your many contributions to us out-of-towners.

Thanks for the suggestions. Doesn%26#39;t look like we%26#39;ll be going hungry!

Thanks, travelingguy... the answer is that I was smart enough to be born here, and I love wandering around finding new places. Fairway isn%26#39;t really a ';hidden treasure'; though, it%26#39;s one of our most popular food stores.
