Help! Last night to eat out.

Thankyou for all your replies previously but we are still undecided where to eat for our last night in NY. We visited 3 years ago and dined out out every night (12 of us) this time only 6 of us and would like to dine somewhere with a little bit of class.

Our original thought was Tavern on the the Green (after recomendation) but then after your replies the River Cafe was our first option, but, as we are only in NY for 3 nights the guys won%26#39;t be taking %26#39;jackets%26#39;.

Please help.

$100 per head excluding drinks, somewhere %26#39;classy%26#39; but not pretenious, where can can %26#39;chill%26#39; and not get pushed out straight after eating.

Dates are 4th - 7th November inclusive, we will all eat %26#39;anything%26#39;.

Thanks in advance for your replies - especially those of you who are NY citizitens, your comments are most apppreciateed.

Help! Last night to eat out.

A couple of places that should fit your budget are Spice Market (in the Meatpacking District) and Gusto (in the Village). They%26#39;re both ';scene'; restaurants, but they%26#39;re both casual and yet serve delicious food. Take a look on menupags.com

New York restaurants (and others, I suspect) develop their business plans around how much money each seat will bring in hourly. So, while most decent restaurants won%26#39;t push you out the door, they don%26#39;t look kindly on people who linger long after the check is paid, particularly when they%26#39;ve got people waiting for tables.

Good Hotel Location...........

We want to come to NYC next spring. There will be 5 of us (2 adults and 3 children) We will stay for probably 2-3 days. We are driving.

Where is a good location to stay for a nice hotel (not luxury, not budget, I guess moderate)?

Suggestions please!

Good Hotel Location...........

The most convenient place for any visitor to stay is Manhattan. The problem with Manhattan for you, though, is that there is on ly one hotel in the entire borough that has free parking. Everyplace else you will find yourself paying through the nose to park a car that you will have no use for the whole time y ou are here.

Your car will be less of an issue if you stay in Queens or in New Jersey, but then the problem becomes that you must ';commute'; into Manhattan every day in order to sightsee.

Good Hotel Location...........

What%26#39;s the name of the hotel that has the free parking?

I work in DC and the average price for parking in hotels or garages is anywhere from $15.00-$25.00 all day for garages and $30.00 or more at most hotels daily parking.

What about those garages where you can park your car and basically leave it. I wouldn%26#39;t mind paying like $50.00-$75.00 for the 2-3 days. Is that possible?

Thanks for responses.

Here%26#39;s a really useful web site re: parking garages; you can search by location (once you know where you%26#39;ll be staying), get prices, and make a reservation (bring your confirmation with you).

You%26#39;re wise to start looking now for next spring because accommodations for parties of 5 are not abundant in Manhattan. A couple of sweet suite possibilities:

the Embassy Suites in lower Manhattan (they often have a stay-and-park package which gives you somewhat of a discount of their usual parking charge); the Affinia chain%26#39;s properties (I myself would pick the Affinia50); the San Carlos; and a local TA favorite, Radio City Apartments (decor is rather dated, a bit more bare bones than the others I%26#39;ve mentioned but fabulous location by Rockefeller Center, clean accommodations %26amp; an excellent value). The Doubletree Suites is also a popular choice for families who wish to be in Times Square... altho%26#39; it%26#39;s a locale you won%26#39;t see many of us locals recommending ;-)

Since all the favorite sighseeing attractions are not clustered together anyway and we%26#39;re so well served by an excellent (and quite safe) public transportation system, location need not be as much of a a driving concern as with some other cities.

Happy hotel hunting!

Oops, here%26#39;s the URL for IconParking:

The hotel that has free parking is the Travel Inn. It%26#39;s a 2 diamond property and gets good reviews here on TA.

Resort for my Elderly Mom and friends

Mom loves the Catskills. Kutshers is booked for her dates in Nov. (12th). Any recommendations for a resort are welcome. They love good food and shows. An indoor pool is imperative. Thanks.

Resort for my Elderly Mom and friends

They might try Friar Tuck Inn. I stayed there a few years ago and I didn%26#39;t think it was as bad as some of the reviews I read here onTrip advisor.

http://www.friartuck.com.

They have an indoor pool, a lounge, and the food wasn%26#39;t bad.

I was trying to reply to a post, through AOL as I always do, and I was sent to a screen asking me to sign in. When I entered my e-mail address, it said ';there is no account for ********@aol.com. Please create a new account.'; I am now trying through Safari and hopefully it works, but does anyone know why I suddenly don%26#39;t exist to TA? I%26#39;ve been a member for 2 years now!

    I don't exist!

Well, obviously Safari works. But why would TA not recognize me through AOL anymore? Are any other AOL users having this problem?

    I don't exist!

it%26#39;s across the board nycforme - had the same problems too but now it seems ok (touchwood!)

it happened to me a few weeks ago - I think it is a glitch. This is what I did to fix the problem: I shut down my browser and the found an old email from TA and logged on from that email.

Well,I am happy to know that you do still exist! :)

Good afternoon/morning; whatever the case may be.

    Hi,

I am making a trip to New York early next month with a mate of mine. We would like a hotel that is around $100 for both of us per night and has relative proximity to ';where it all goes on';, should i say. Don%26#39;t want to be stuck far out from attractions/city centre, or whatever the case may be.

It is my first trip to the US, so looking forward to it immensely.

What about attractions ? We are in our mid-late twenties, btw.

I am especially looking forward to stacked pancakes, yankie-style eggs, etc. Is there a breakfast bar that you might reccommend that perhapos is near to an attraction that you reccommend; ie. beside Central Park / adjacent to somewhere that you might hop off at on the New York bus tour, etc.

Please forgive me as know very little. Have used these forums on trips before, but I am confident that the New York forum surpasses anything else :D ;)

What about a nice American grill serving good steaks / ribs, etc. ? Perhaps go to Times Square at night and dine at one of these beforehand ??

    Thanks v.much in advance,

    Andrew.

Good afternoon/morning; whatever the case may be.

Oh, and I am from Northern Ireland, so know very little !

    Please Help !!!

    :)

Good afternoon/morning; whatever the case may be.

You%26#39;re going to struggle with accommodation for that price this late on in the day. Try www.secondhomesecondavenue.com, www.bedandcoffee.com and www.chelsealodge.com. These are all shared bathroom places but all in a good location (for me personally bed and coffee is in the worst location of the three). You could also try some of the YMCA%26#39;s.

Good ribs near TS - Virgils.

And invest in a good guide book - the attractions you might like to see will differ from those say I would or someone else. My top ones are in no partic order

    Top of the Rock

    Empire State Buidling

    Time Square

    Central Park

Brooklyn Bridge (walking Brooklyn to Manhattan)

Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty

    Macys

    Greenwich Village

Chinatown (for a wander to see the fish markets and for food)

Link to Virgils (their trainwreck fries are to die for!) http://www.virgilsbbq.com/

So, you%26#39;ll be there in November. I agree that finding good hotel for %26lt;$100 may be a challenge, especially at this late date, but do try. Try going throuogh Orbitz, and the other discounters, Hotels.com, and the Hotel links at the airlines.

Some hotel names Ipicked up in this forum:

30/30 Hotel - There have been some mixed reviews, but it may work okay if oyu are flexible.

    Da Vinci Hotel

    Cosmopolitan Hotel

    Newton Hotel

You can Google for the websites. Those 3 may be more than $100 if they have space, but worth the try.

Check the websites for Comfort Inn, Travelodge, Days Inn. They may have some lower rates.

Are you a member of International Youth Hostel, and are you interested in these places? There are a few few IYH and private hostels in Manhattan. Worth checking out.

Breakfast in NYC - there are a couple of different ways to go - working class and middle class. By working class, I am thinking of breakfast and lunch places that serve up a quick meal for people getting to work. It has nothing to do with social class, and everything to do with getting breakfast on the way to work. These are often small lunch counter places that may have a few tables or booths. You can sit at the counter and wathc the cook, who is a flash of arms and eggs and toast. The food is usually great, if a bit on the greasy side, and cheap. You can still get breakfast in these places for as little as $1.99 for 2 eggs, home fries and toast. You will find these places in residential neighborhoods and in high density work areas, such as the Garment District (mid 20s to the upper 30s between 5th Ave and 9th Ave), all along 2nd and 3rd Ave, Broadway, Columbus or Amsterdam Aves. above 59th street, etc. Less likely in Times Square or other touoristy areas.

What I am calling middle class, is more visually attractive or cushy. The places are generally larger, as are the prices. The portions may be larger, but not necessarily. But the presentation is nicer, and the food may be a bit less greasy. And you won%26#39;t get to watch the cook. There are a lot of delis that will serve an awesome breakfast like this, but expcet to pay $6 to $10 or more, depending on where you go.

My suggestion is to experience both. I have no specific places to recommend. I am sure others will.

Attractions - Check out Greenwich Village at night. Lots of night life there, live music, dance, sports bars, hang out bars, etc. Also check out other nieghborhoods both to walk around and for night activity - Upper West Side - 60s to 90s+ Broadway and either side. Union Square, Tribeca, Soho, Little Italy, East Village - all these neighborhoods pretty much connect to each other, not necessarily in the order that I have noted them.

Thanks v.much, folks - you have been most helpful !

Am also spending a couple of days with my mate at Westchester.

Getting around is best in a Subway, right...? :)

Definitely try hotels.com - you can see places in your price range at a glance and it will check availability for you. Although if there is somewhere you particularly like the look of or read up on an area and fancy it then it would be worth contacting the hotels directly.

Subway is probably the cheapest way to get around (other than walking of course!) but I thought I missed a lot by zipping around underground.

Would probably rate the choices like this

Walking - Cheapest, most interesting (you can always stumble across an area that you want to explore more) but slowest.

Subway - Fastest, next cheapest to walking, but you might miss a lot of sights for the ease of getting from A-B quicker.

Bus - Same as subway but you get to see the sights, same cost (get a metrocard, have a look on http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/index.html for more info) but a slower because of traffic.

Taxi - Most expensive, do it at least once just for the experience! Slower in traffic as with anywhere.

And don%26#39;t forget the water-taxi if it happens to be on your route - its a fab way to see the skyline and get where you%26#39;re going at the same time.

    nywatertaxi.com

Hi Andy. Keep in mind that Manhattan Island is only 2 miles across and 8 miles long so nothing whatsoever is far away. You%26#39;ll be delighted with the ease of getting places in Manhattan. I used to presume New York City (in my mind comprising Manhattan) was a tangled, bewildering overcrowded, frenzied place, but being there was so-o-o easy to navigate.

Also, public tranportation is bounteous. I%26#39;m staying at Holiday Inn Express Metro Tunnel in a couple of weeks and it%26#39;s in Long Island City across the river in Queens. Even so it%26#39;s on a subway line which makes it quite central. A Trip Advisor member%26#39;s good reviews from a very recent visit steered me in that direction. The hotel%26#39;s lowest rate, for any kind of room, is $128 plus tax (@ 14%?), and it%26#39;s a widely available price.

My point is that to get a room in your price range requires booking outside Manhattan but booking outside Manhattan doesn%26#39;t necessarily isolate you from it. Do check hotel forums for places in Queens and nearby New Jersey on the public transit and you won%26#39;t miss out.

The two of you will have a blast!!! :-)

Actually, Manhattan is 12 miles long, but if you are not going to the Cloisters, it is easy to forget about that top part up there... ;o)

Oh! Quel bleu! I%26#39;ve been wrong all this time! [giggle] That still makes it 30 sq mi. Our school district is 89 sq mi so Manhattan seemed cosy. Well, sort of. (But you don%26#39;t have the Cone Road grain elevator, do you?)

    Sorry for silliness. It%26#39;s Friday.

I want to go to The Cloisters, even though I don%26#39;t exactly know what it is/they are! Over the years I%26#39;ve heard good reviews from credible people. Now at least I know it is/they are up North a ways.

    continental airlines baggage allowance

We are travelling to New York in October with Continental airlines out of Belfast. Our luggage is certain to be heavier on the return journey. How strictly does the airline operate its baggage allowance policy which I think is 23 kilos per passenger for the checked in baggage?

    continental airlines baggage allowance

Hi Morgan /We traveled last November with Continental out of Belfast, you are allowed 2bags each weighing 23kg each I thought for sure we were over limit but were fine. We did see people taking items out of cases and distributing them amoung friends! We are traveling next Sunday with Aer Lingus got a good deal out of Dublin;o)

    continental airlines baggage allowance

We are going to take one case each and an extra hold all bag inside the case to check in as well coming back, go in a month and can%26#39;t wait. We go on 28th, what date do you go?

Here is updated baggage allowance from Continentals site.....

In addition, customers may not bring liquids, gels or aerosols purchased inside the sterile area onboard the aircraft. Examples of liquids and gels include beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, liquid cosmetics and items of a similar consistency. Electronics (laptop, cell phone, hair dryer, etc.) are permitted but must be taken out of their case to be screened.

Musicians will be permitted to take a second piece of carry-on baggage to accommodate their musical instrument.

These measures apply to all scheduled and charter flight operations that depart from the U.K. and Delhi.

    At the Airport:

All passengers should plan to arrive at the airport three hours in advance of scheduled departure time.

    Sorry pasted the wrong part!

2 Checked Bags: Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) per piece.

though I did get an email from them the other day (deleted it now) and it said the 3 pieces was still applicable. Maybe call them, they are very helpful on the phone...

    continental.com/web/鈥ontact.aspx

Thanks NYCFAN NI and Elle. I think that we will carry a hold all in the case for the return journey and take our chances. We head off on 10 October. Many thanks for your replies

No Probs Morgan, have a great trip :o)

Is it really 23kg per case and two per person?

yes it is two check baggeges at 23 kg each

I can answer your question for certain. I am in the same situation as you but am flying Nov 6 from Dublin to Newark. I emailed Continental about the allowance and after a week got this reply:

    Mr. Callaghan:

Each ticketed passenger is allowed 2 checked bags weighing up to 23kg per bag and measuring up to 157cm per bag. Also, you are allowed upto 18kg in hand luggage

Thank you for considering Continental Airlines for your upcoming travel plans. We hope we can accommodate the many treasures you%26#39;re sure to find!

  • Directions from Brooklyn Bridge to Circle Line

I am still trying to figure out what we are going to do when, but I have an idea. I definitely want to walk over the bridge to Manhattan at sunset, so I thought it might work if we walk over the bridge and go straight to where the Circle Line night tour leaves from. Can anyone give me directions on how I would do that? It%26#39;s not far is it? Thanks!!

Directions from Brooklyn Bridge to Circle Line

It depends on what you consider far. It%26#39;s about five miles -- is that ';far';? The Circle Line leaves from 43rd Street and Twelfth Avenue. There is no subway station west of Eighth Avenue, which is about 2/3 of a mile from the river. Probably the simplest thing to do would be to take a cab. The best place to find a cab near the Brooklyn Bridge is directly in front of the Municipal Building at #1 Centre Street, near the corner of Chambers. Taxis coming back across the bridge have to stop for the traffic light -- and that is when you can snag one. If you want a taxi, do not cross towards City Hall after crossing the bridge. Instead, turn right and then cross back to the Municipal Building side of Centere Street.

If you want to take mass transit, on the other hand, cross to the City Hall side of the street. turn right to Chambers Street, and then turn left. Go two blocks (first Broadway, then Church) and at the corner of Church and Chambers enter the subway. Take the A, C, or E train uptown to 42nd Street. From 42nd and Eighth either walk to the Hudson River, or take the crosstown bus to Twelfth Avenue. (Make sure you do not take the bus going to the Javits Center!)

Thanks GWB! Sounds like a plan. I appreciate all the help you have given me!

    Star Spot

    Hello All,

Just a quick one - maybe a bit daft but i%26#39;m going to ask. Is there anywhere in the city you can go that has guaranteed ';star'; spotting?

    Also,

Still struggling with a choice for a restuarant for our first night. We want to get dressed up, go out, not spend oodles of dosh but find somewhere that has a bit of atmosphere. When i last visited, hubbie and i dined in Cibo up near Grand Central Station. This time i don%26#39;t just want to go back to the familiar, that is too easy!

Want to show my Mum a good time, she deserves it. She%26#39;s never been to NY before and is quite excited.

    All advice appreciated as usual.

    Star Spot

I would suggest Balthazar as a choice for you. Great atmosphere, often celebs but I can%26#39;t guarantee it, and delicious french food. Here is a link

    http://www.balthazarny.com

    Star Spot

There%26#39;s a restaurant in SoHo that guarantees a movie star at their place 24/7 for your pleasure. But it%26#39;s hard to get a reservtion.

Um,..just kidding. I can%26#39;t think of anywhere that would guarantee a star for you. However, if you think the Today or Good Morning America hosts are stars, you could just get up early and go to Times Sq or Rockefeller Plaza to stand around watching their shows. There%26#39;s a good chance they%26#39;ll have a celebrity guest.

    Cheers,

The plaza at the CBS building / FAO Shwarz store facing 5th Ave. We saw Ryan Reynolds and A-Rod within 5 minutes of each other on Columbus day. Very cool.

People say if you go to Joe Allen%26#39;s for an after theater dinner, you are likely to have some celeb sightings.

As a first time visitor to New York is it better to pre-book tickets to the TOTR? I am travelling oct21-28 what time is sunset? I would like to make sure I see the views around about this time

    Thank you for your help

    Top of the Rock

Use this site to get sunset times

(aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html). I personally wouldn%26#39;t bother prebooking the tickets as there are generally no queues--- last week they were giving $2 off coupons at the booths on the concourse.

    Top of the Rock

There was quite large queues last weekend. We went up weekdays and no queue at all.

    Hi

I was in NY last weekend and visited the TOTR on Sunday afternoon. No queues for tickets or to get up in the lift. Stunning views. Knocks spots off the view from the Empire State Building which we also went to and had to wait 90 minutes to get to the top.

Make sure you go before it gets dark or you will miss the great views of Central Park. It was getting dark last weekend between 6.35 and 6.45pm.

    Enjoy.

    Help with NYC hotels

We are coming to NYC for the first time for my sister%26#39;s 50th birthday. We have 3 middle-aged sisters , two teen daughters, and my 75 year old mother. I have booked tickets for the Rocketts Christmas Show and for Hairspray. We only have 2 nights. Plan to do some shopping and looking for must see things. We can%26#39;t go too crazy because I don%26#39;t want to wipe out my Mom. Any suggestions? I have also booked two hotels and can%26#39;t decide which would work best for us. Hoping you can help. I have a one bedroon suite at the Hilton New York for all 6 of us. It has 2 double beds and a pull out sofa. I have also booked 2 rooms at the Courtyard Marriott in Times Square. Which would have a better location? What do you recommend for reasonable places to eat at those locations? Any help for a first timer would be appreciated. Thanks

    Help with NYC hotels

With a party of 6, I would go with the Courtyard rather than the Hilton for the simple reason that 4 real beds, 2 baths trumps 2 beds + 1 pullout couch, 1 bathroom :-)

Here%26#39;s the most recent thread re: restaurants in the Times Square area, but if you%26#39;d like additional suggestions, simply type Times Square restaurants into the Forum search box which appears above your post to retrieve more:

If you can afford it, either the Party Shuttle or Marvelous Manhattan tours would be an especially nice way for your mother to see the sights with a minimum of fatigue. Because it%26#39;s not a hop-off/hop-on service and they use mini-buses, it%26#39;s a more ';intimate'; expericen; plus, their tour guides are quite good.

    Help with NYC hotels

I agree with CockleCove. Real beds are better than a sofa bed; 2 bathrooms are better than 1. If you look at the reviews of the Hilton, there is a review with photos from someone who stayed in a 1 bedroom suite, and it doesn%26#39;t look all that spacious. I like the location of the Hilton, but the Courtyard%26#39;s location is also good and it gets better reviews.

I%26#39;m not sure about restaurants in the immediate area of the Courtyard, but a number of good places are just a few blocks north in the theater district (Ollie%26#39;s for chinese, Carmine%26#39;s for Italian, Junior%26#39;s, Virgil%26#39;s BBQ, etc.).

Wendi I%26#39;m working on the London trip - hoping to make it :)

    Brilliant!

Great pictures, Louise! I look forward to seeing more!

loved the ones of the butterfly, so pretty and the ESB at sunset....

I%26#39;m just starting to browse but will have to wait until tomorrow. Just some quick comments....

I have no idea what a ';perspex'; is, but the image is wonderful.

The sunset shot of the red-lit ESB is probably the most gorgeous shot I%26#39;ve ever seen of the building!!! And I love the angle you captured on #88.

My guess on #68 (Where%26#39;s Waldo?) is -- behind the lamp post? And, no, I haven%26#39;t gotten bored of the Waldo photos. I love everything about how you shoot a picture... the angles, the shadows... wish I had half your talent.

And #103 is what I call the Petrossian Building. It%26#39;s a landmarked building, but I can%26#39;t think of the name of it offhand. I%26#39;ll remember (or find it) tomorrow.

Manana.... gotta run. Kazza, I%26#39;ll give Marea your love.

wow! gorgeous! You are so talented, and I thoroughly enjoyed your photos. The Cloisters shots are just beautiful, and, and, and...too many to list!

    LOL - the sneaky shot.

Thank you so much for sharing them.

    Vegetarian Restaurants, Cafes

Here are a few that I like, but remember that you can get vegetarian options in most places. Are you vegan?

  • The Nicest Brodaway Theatre?

    I accept it%26#39;s all relative ;-)

But.. I would welcome opinions on the nicest Broadway Theatre

The Architecture, History, Bar Areas, Good Views from most seats etc

    The Nicest Brodaway Theatre?

Well, I%26#39;d never pick a show based on the theater, but since you asked...

I like the Marquis because of its comfortable seats with relatively generous leg room. The Shubert is the most ornate of the theaters I%26#39;ve seen. The renovations of the New Amsterdam, Hilton and American Airlines theaters are very nice.

I like the Richard Rodgers theater because the floor slopes upward more steeply than usual in the rear half of the orchestra section, so visibility from the back rows (i.e., the ones where you can actually get seats without paying a premium) is relatively good. I also think that the layout of the Vivian Beaumont is good for visibility.

To me the main problem with most bars in theaters is that they are too crowded, so those with more space are best, IMO. I%26#39;d nominate the Neil Simon theater as a good example (it%26#39;s not unusually pretty, just relatively roomy).

    The Nicest Brodaway Theatre?

    jensdad thanks for your response.

    :-)

Not saying I would pick a show based based purely on theatre either but if it%26#39;s a toss up between equally appealing shows a nice theatre, with some history would help me decide

Sounds like theatre bars are the same the world over - squashed!

I agree it%26#39;s a bit unorthodox to pick a show based on a theater in which it%26#39;s showing, but still, try broadwaybox.com/theaters/discounttheatertick鈥?/a> to see a list of Brodaway theaters and discount tickets to their shows. Enjoy!

The most beautiful theater is the Lyceum, though it could sure use a bit of renovating. It%26#39;s a smallish jewel box, richly detailed. And the sound is great -- I once sat in the very back of the balcony, right up there next to the ceiling -- and heard every word clearly, even though there was no electronic amplification for that show.

On the same block is the historic Belasco, famous for being haunted. The movie ';No Way to Treat a Lady'; was filmed there. It also could use a renovation, but the mustiness adds to the mysterious character.

The Walter Kerr is probably the best kept of the older theaters, it%26#39;s really gorgeous inside.

On the other end of the scale, the most hideous -- to me -- are the newer theaters. The Marquis might be comfortable, but it looks like an airline terminal. The Minskoff is just a big ugly barn.

The Richard Rodgers has absolutely the best sight lines.

Can%26#39;t believe I omitted the New Amsterdam Theater, absolutely one of the most beautiful. The Palace is also gorgeous.

Unfortunately, one of the most beautiful theaters, the Mark Hellinger, was converted to a church years ago.

Thanks for the info everyone - appreciate all the opinions

Better get booking a show our trip to NY is in less than a month!

    Booked Hairspray in the end.

May also go see an off Broadway show - cannot remember the precise name - A Jews Life in Brooklyn ? gets great reviews on one of the sites

I have looked at web images of some of the theatres listed in posts, beautiful designs - must really enhance the theatre experience for people!

  • jersey boys tickets / Hudson river cruise

    Hi there,

I am planning on taking a trip on the spirit cit cruises. Is this a good trip. ie is the food and entertainment worth the money. I was hoping to take in a show beforehand ideally a 2pm performance. Is this going to allow me enough time toget to the port for 6.30?

I am desperate for tickets for november 25th 2pm jersey boys but they are so expensive. Would I be better waiting until I arrive in town or am I not going to get a better deal.

Does the above sound like a good day/night out for a birthday treat or am I wasting my money?

Your thorghts/suggestions are welcomed and needed.

    Many Thanks!!

jersey boys tickets / Hudson river cruise

Nov 25 is Thanksgiving weekend. Crowds for all the shows.

jersey boys tickets / Hudson river cruise

So do you think I am better to buy in advance?

I can respond to the Jersey Boys portion of your post. This is a FANTASTIC show! I can%26#39;t say enough goods things about this awesome show. IMHO, this alone would make a great birthday treat; and paired with a cruise, sounds fun! I would do this in a hearbeat!

Jersey boys is one of the Hottest Tickets this fall, if there are any seats available thru telecharge i%26#39;d snap them up. The wednesday matanee shows the day before thanksgiving day is usually an extreemly day.

    PS the show is great.

Yes, Jersey Boys tickets are expensive. If you find any available for your dates--grab them while you can! I hate to say what we paid for premium seats but they were worth every penny. Besides--you%26#39;ll never know who will be sitting near you--Diana Ross was right behind us!

Have recently returned from NY (4th Oct),did the river cruise at night

used Spirit cruise (boat called Bateaux ?,it had a glass roof).

Totally enjoyed it,even though they kept serving us someone elses food!

Live music was good %26amp; food of a quality, would do it again.

You don%26#39;t say how much the tickets are you have found. It is absolutely NOT better to wait til you arrive. This is a holiday weekend and there will be no tickets. A 2 pm matinee will get out around 4:30-5 pm so you should have enough time to get to your cruise. Bateaux NY (done by Spirit) is considered very good.

You can check www.applause-tickets.com and see if they have tickets that are any cheaper.

should we buy our theatre tikts ahead?

    Hello all you NYC experts!

We finally booked our trip mid November (16-19th) and was wondering about Phantom of the Opera and booking ahead. I want good seats as I have always wanted to see this show. I am not sure whether we should take the chance and get them the day of...at the TKT centres at half price or does this one book up fast and should we book now ?

    Thanks muchly...

should we buy our theatre tikts ahead?

Buy them now! Here%26#39;s a link to broadwaybox.com%26#39;s coupon for Phantom. The second coupon is valid for your dates:

    broadwaybox.com/shows/the_phantom_of_the_ope鈥?/a>

I%26#39;d recommend you PHONE Telecharge instead of buying online. That way you can talk to a live agent. You should access the seating chart on playbill.com. Here%26#39;s a link:

    http://www.playbill.com/reference/seating/

Scroll down the page and click on the link for the Majestic Theater.

should we buy our theatre tikts ahead?

Wowo! Thank-you so much....I went on line last night and purchased them....two at 71.25 each plus the fee of 6.50 and hadling charge of 2.50....We saved almost $80.00 doing it this way. BroadwayBox.com emailed us our tickets this morning ...so we are set to go Friday night. Thank-you so much, we are so excited.

They mentioned Sardis before the show...I have heard of this place, but am not familiar with what they serve and whther it is worth the most probable hight price? Could you give us your opion of the place? Thank-you again...

    Priceline success 11/06-11/10 Paramount $160.00

I just wanted to share my Priceline sucess. I had booked the Belvedere for these dates as a cancelable backup for around $265.00 per night plus taxes. I saw on Hotwire a 3* in the Times Square area for $189 last night and figured it was the Paramount. I knew if I wanted to deal with their tiny rooms I would have to get an excellent deal. I bid $160 for 11/6-11/10 and was rejected. I then bid $160 for 11/6-11/09 knowing I could use their add a night feature or book on Hotwire for $189. My bid of $160 was accepted and I could add the night for $160 also. I am thrilled. I had been bidding on PL for about a month with no luck-up to $270 for a 4* and $220 for a 3*. I didnt really care about a particular hotel as much as I cared about the area. This is an especially really expensive time in NYC-arent they all- and I feel like I got a great deal and hope this can help someone else.

    Priceline success 11/06-11/10 Paramount $160.00

I got the Hudson last weekend on two day%26#39;s notice for $145 a night...a lot of people crab about the hotel, but I like it and given that its cheapest rooms rates started at around $300, I thought it was a steal.

What a deal for the Hudson. Their rooms are supposed to be really small too. I had read all of the reviews of the Paramount but I really just need a place to sleep and I am not expecting much.. I love Priceline for hotel rooms and rental cars. I would never use them for plane tickets because I don%26#39;t mind paying more for the most direct flights at the times I want. Using Priceline In NYC I have gotten the Hyatt for $160., 70 Park Ave. for $210. and my best deal ever the Westin for $80. All rates were at least half of the cheapest on line rate. I would rather do more shopping and eating in nice restaurants than pay for a hotel.

Exactly...I%26#39;ve used both Priceline and Hotwire and have had excellent luck with both. Of course, times change and prices go up, but I%26#39;ve gotten the Sheraton Tower and The Sheraton Manhattan for $80 and $75 respectively (in 2002 %26amp; 2003) and the Park Central and Murray Hill Suites East for $100 or under. Since I usually have to work on a tight budget, it really helps.

Also used Hotwire for an extended family emergency flight once and wasn%26#39;t disappointed.

I like Priceline for New York because there don%26#39;t seem to be any real dogs if you bid for a 4 * in the Midtown West area. We%26#39;ll be at the NY Hilton, not my first choice, but a steal at $90/night, cheaper than a private room at the hostel! Priceline was a boon for us on this super budget trip.

Idiot's guide to the Brooklyn Bridge - please

I know this may sound really daft, but can anyone give me idiot-proof instructions on how to get to the bridge? I guess I%26#39;ll get to Brooklyn by subway but where do I go then? Which street is the approach to the bridge on?

I really want to walk the bridge back to Manhattan, but sadly will have limited time available and don%26#39;t want to waste any of it.

    Thankyou.

Idiot's guide to the Brooklyn Bridge - please

Okay, here you go: An Idiot%26#39;s Guide to Getting to the Brooklyn Bridge Walkway from the Subway.

There are several ways of getting to the walkway, depending on which subway you take, and which exit you use from certain stations.

You should also be aware that there are two different ways to get on the bridge walkway in Brooklyn.

High Street on the A/C is the station closest to the Brooklyn Bridge. Here are the two ways to get from High Street to the Bridge, depending on which exit you use.

FIRST WAY -- FROM EXIT NEAR BACK OF TRAIN AT HIGH STREET STATION:

If you exit the station near the rear of a Brooklyn-bound train, you will find the escalator that leads to the street. You will emerge from the subway on the west side of Cadman Plaza West, near Middagh Street. (Note - ';High Street'; itself no longer exists there; do NOT look for street signs that say ';High Street';).

Across the Street you will see a park. That is Cadman Plaza Park - cross the street towards it. When you have crossed the street, you may do one of two things:

    1) Turn left. Walk along the edge of the park to Prospect Street. Be careful as you do this, because you will be crossing two exit ramps from the Bridge as you do it. Turn right on Prospect Street and walk under the Bridge ramp. At the next corner (which is Washington Street/Cadman Plaza East), turn right. A few yards ahead, in the stone wall of the bridge structure on your right, is the entrance to a staircase that leads to the Bridge walkway. Walk up those stairs.

OR -- 2) After crossing the street to the park, continue in the same direction and walk directly across the park to the street on the far side. This is Cadman Plaza East. Turn left. As you walk along, on your left you will come to the stone structure supporting the Bridge ramp. There is an entrance to the staircase that leads to the Bridge in this stone wall.

SECOND WAY - FROM EXIT NEAR FRONT OF TRAIN AT HIGH STREET STATION:

There is no escalator at this end -- but the bridge entrance is actually a little easier to find. When you come up on the street, you will be on Adams Street/Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard, just a little south of Sands Street. Turn so that the road is on your right, the parking lot and apartment houses are on your left, and the big sign that says ';Read God%26#39;s Word The Holy Bible Daily'; (which is on the world headquarters of the Jehovah%26#39;s Witnesses) is directly behind you. Walk south along the sidewalk all the way to the corner of Tillary Street. At the corner of Tillary Street, turn right. In the middle of Adams Street is the entrance of the walkway.

    FROM CLARK STREET STATION:

When you come out of the station, you will be on the northwest corner of Henry Street and Clark Street. Cross Henry Street and walk east one block on Clark Street to Cadman Plaza West. Cross Cadman Plaza West and turn right. At the next corner, you will be at Tillary Street; turn left. Walk two blocks -- the first block brings you to Cadman Plaza East, and the second brings you past the new United States Courthouse to Adams Street. In the middle of Adams Street at Tillary is the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge walkway.

    FROM BOROUGH HALL/COURT STREET STATION:

If you come up to the Street on Joralemon Street, turn so that old Borough Hall is on your left and the Brooklyn Municipal Building in on your right. Walk to the corner -- this is Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard/Adams Street. Turn left and walk up this street to Tillary Street. Cross Tillary Street and turn right -- the entrance to the walkway is in the middle of the street in front of you.

If you come up in the park in front of Borough Hall: Turn your back on Borough Hall, and keep the 1950%26#39;s courthouse on your right. Walk up the path in the park to Johnson Street/Tech Place, and turn right one block. At Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard/Adams street, turn left and walk up this street to Tillary Street. Cross Tillary Street and turn right -- the entrance to the walkway is in the middle of the street in front of you.

If you come up to the street at the corner of Court and Montague: Cross Court Street to the park where Borough Hall and the Courthouse are. Turn left and walk to Johnson Street/Tech Place. Turn right one block to Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard/Adams Street. Turn left and walk up this street to Tillary Street. Cross Tillary Street and turn right -- the entrance to the walkway is in the middle of the street in front of you.

If you come up on Montague Street next to St. Anne/Holy Trinity Church: Turn so that the street is to your right and the church is to your left. Cross Clinton Street, and walk one block on Montague Street to Court Street. Cross Court Street to the park where Borough Hall and the Courthouse are.

Idiot's guide to the Brooklyn Bridge - please

GWB Thankyou so much - that%26#39;s exactly what I needed. Much appreciated. Regards, Barbara.

    Hi Kebabs

I%26#39;m just writing to tell you my friend Maureen lives in Waterlooville!!

Small world. Thanks for asking your question as I%26#39;ll be in NYC in August and can use this info

GWB, thanks for posting this - it is also exactly what i%26#39;ve been looking for!

we have been advised that a good time to walk across the bridge is just as the sun sets or even after dark. Is Brooklyn a safe place to be after dark or would we be best walking from Manhattan but not actually reaching the Brookly side?

What kind of timing would it be if:

    1. We take the subway to Brooklyn and walk the bridge back to Manhattan? And what stop do we take on the Brooklyn side?

    2. We walk from the Manhattan side, go half-way and then walk back?

Don%26#39;t know which we%26#39;ll do til we get there. Our goal is too see the sunset on the bridge.

Nola you may as well get the subway across to Brooklyn and then walk the whole length of the bridge - how long it takes depends on how long you stop to take photos (took us just over an hour but then Steve does carry on with his pics!!!)

as for subway stops - GWB has listed them above with directions from each one so depending what number train you get depends which one you%26#39;d get off at :)

The Brooklyn side of the bridge(Brooklyn Heights) is very safe and more posh than the Manhattan side of the bridge.

Thanks for all your replys. We definitely want to see the sunset on this bridge and want to make the time to do it!

Intinerary Ideas - Four Days (First Visit)

My husband and i have four nights in New York in January and its our first ever trip! I am really unsure of how to structure our time there even after reading guide books! There just seems so much to see...

We want to do all the main attractions including statue of liberty, staten is ferry, rockefeller, central park, shopping etc etc... We wont want to see museums as we are spending a week in Italy before coming here. My husband also wants to visit the giants ground (he is a keen gridiron punter) and possibly see Yankee stadium.

Can anyone recommend the best way to structure our free days? Are we better off getting on one of those hop on/hop off tours or should we do it ourselves? Any recommendations for yummy restaurants, ideas for lunches etc that aren%26#39;t expensive but have a great atmosphere? I am diabetic so will be trying to stick to the healther options although from past experience in the US and travelling in general its hard!

    Day One

Arrive JFK airport on Sunday at 1.30pm. Aim to catch bus to Port Authority and then a cab to the Salisbury hotel... Check in, freshin up and then wonder down to Times Square area to check out the city! Head back for a cheapish and tasty dinner somewhere near the hotel??

    Day Two

    Free for exploring

Nice dinner out somewhere and then go out for drinks - where can you go on a Monday night???

    Day Three

    Free for exploring

    Mary Poppins at 8pm

    Day Four

    Free for exploring

    Knicks game at 7.30pm

    Fly out the next morning

Intinerary Ideas - Four Days (First Visit)

I just got back last week -

they have these passes that you can get to save alot of coin.

I found out after the fact.

    But I%26#39;d recommend --

the 3 hr boat ride around manhattan

    the combo deal of:

    - NBC Studio Tour

    - Rockefeller Tour (hope you get Sylvia)

    - Top of the Rock

    For dinner/drinks -

we did Esperanto on the east side, then just x2 doors down was an awesome wine/jazz bar -

here%26#39;s the profile for the restaurant -

if you call, the should know name of jazz/wine bar next door -

Intinerary Ideas - Four Days (First Visit)

There are particular issues for a Jan. visit, like potential freezing cold! The hop on/off bus tours really require you sit upstairs in the open air. That could be pretty chilly. I think a 3 hr. boat cruise is also a bit much in Jan. (not sure they run then) I%26#39;d suggest you might consider doing one of the enclosed bus tours on your first full day. These 2 are considered good

    nypartyshuttle.com

    kingofnyc.com

    For dinner near your hotel

Kennedy%26#39;s (an Irish pub/restaurant) on west 57 st.

Rue 57 (sushi and French bistro food)

Trattoria Dell %26#39;Arte (Italian known for their antipasto--)

    Angelo%26#39;s pizzeria--(pizza and other things)

Go to menupages.com for reviews and more info.

Where to go on a Mon. night?

%26gt;The Carnegie Club is only a block from your hotel. They have jazz on Mon. nights at 9

    http://hospitalityholdings.com/carnegie/

%26gt;Jim Caruso%26#39;s Cast Party-Mon. nights most theaters are ';dark'; (closed) and many of the performers come to sing here, at Birdland (near Times Square) at 9:30--

    http://www.castpartynyc.com/

%26gt;Dizzy%26#39;s Coca Cola in the Time Warner building (a few blocks from your hotel) is a great jazz venue. On Mons. they have jazz students performing and cover charge (entry fee) is usually $15/person vs. $30 on other nights.

OR head downtown to the village and maybe have dinner down there and go to one of the many jazz places there.

La Lanterna for Italian/pizza and then the bar next door for jazz

    lalanternacaffe.com/tab0/鈥?53Dnutr

The only reason to do the Staten Island ferry really is to see the STatue of Liberty IF you don%26#39;t want to actually go to visit the statue. So do one or the other. A visit to the Statue is quite time consuming though with security. I%26#39;m pretty sure the tours I mentioned up top include a trip on the SI ferry.

The Giants play in New Jersey which is a bus ride away (get bus at Port Authority bus terminal). But I don%26#39;t think there are tours. Here%26#39;s a link

    www.meadowlands.com/giantsFacts.asp?navID=7

Yankee stadium is a subway ride away (north of Manhattan) and there are daily tours (at noon) although I%26#39;m not sure about Jan. The current calendar only goes to Dec.

    鈥lb.com/NASApp/鈥ome

There%26#39;s a Whole Foods supermarket in the Time Warner building (near your hotel) that%26#39;s a good option for casual dining and food you can take back to the hotel.

Thanks mywhiz thats fantastic info!! Do you know if there is a site i can visit that shows when things might be closed in January? I am going to check out those tour sites now, cheers.

Downtown, will definitely do the combo tour sounds great!

Many people underestimate how much time it takes to get around and see things... even for us who live there. Recommend identifying a ';section'; of town and doing in-depth.. Midtown, downtown, around town. Don%26#39;t recommend hop on/off... expensive and it visiting just 1 thing (e.g., Empire State Blg) can easily take 3-4 hours of time to get tickets, to site and visit.

Boat rides around city from day to evening show the best of it - nice to see the transformation to sparkling lights. Look into Spirit of NY and Circle Line.

Big Onion Walking Tours always a lot of fun. Meet a guide on street corner, group usually between 15-40 and cost about $15-20. Great in-depth, historical, interesting tidbits about an area (e.g., Central Pk, Lower East Side, Brooklyn Bridge).

  • NY for 9 days

Hi everyone. I%26#39;m coming to ny with my girlfriend and her 3 collegues in november. They won an graphic designer award so we decided to recieve it and to explore new york.

We like museums, art, walk, clubbing, theatres, go around the city, eat, drink....to know the citiy and have a good time.

please experienced new yorkers tell us what to see and what to do!

we are accomodated in midtown, murray hill.

    Thanks a lot!

    NY for 9 days

New York is one of the great art centers of the entire world. There are dozens of museums, hundreds of art galleries, and thousands of working artists here. What kind of museums and art do you like best?

New York is also the center of theater in the United States. There are many plays, both musicals and ';straight'; plays, playing at any time. Those in larger theaters are called ';Broadway'; plays, even though the theaters are not on Broadway itself, while ';Off Broadway'; does not mean location as much as it means the size of the theater. We also have two opera companies, numerous orchestras, ballet and dance companies -- you name it. Keep in mind that this one city has more than twice as many people as your entire country.

Whatever YOU want to see or do can be seen or done here. it might therefore be easier if YOU specifically said what type of thing you wanted to see or do. It is also a good idea to get a guide book and to start to find out about what New York has to offer.

    NY for 9 days

    barico,

If you spend some time (ok, a lot of time) scrolling back through the pages here, you%26#39;ll find plenty of useful suggestions of what to see and do.

Have pen and paper handy. When you start to see the same things mentioned again and again, you know you%26#39;re onto something.

Ok. We will probably go to moma, gugenheim maybe national museup. What do you think about national library. the thing is that we know the basics what to see but we would like to see the sence of life in ny. like for example if you come to croatia I would tell you what to do besides the monuments, buildings and museums!

What about other parts of ny besides mannhattan?

Of course we have to be reasonable with spending money....

    thanks a lot guys!

    Here are some suggestions:

Apply for a Big Apple Greeter - www.bigapplegreeter.org - NOW (as long as you have a bonafide hotel reservation).

This is a FREE service that pairs volunteers with visitors and get to see parts of the city you may not necessarily see otherwise.

I would get out of Manhattan - visit Brooklyn - lots of great architecture, go to The Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Heights (Brooklyn Historical Society is located there), walk the Promenade %26amp; The Brooklyn Bridge. Williamsburg, in Brooklyn, would be a great place for clubbing.

Or visit The Bronx Zoo, NY Botanical Garden or Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

The NYC neighborhood, Chelsea, is chock full of art galleries that may interest you:

    westchelseaarts.com/

Plus, this area is beautiful, also lots of clubs, shops, inexpensive restaurants.

Besides MOMA %26amp; The Met, there are so many other museums which are wonderful in NYC. For a full listing:

Make sure you know the hours of the various museums, most are usually closed as least 1 or 2 days per week, so plan accordingly.

Also, check their entry policy - when ';suggested'; is stated, it is pay as you wish, and many museums have free days or evenings for those on a budget.

I highly recommend The Tenement Museum for a real slice of NYC life at the turn and the century, and believe it or not, today as well.

    This is a fascinating place.

Here is some info on a Lower East Side walking tour:

鈥?Meet at Katz%26#39;s Delicatessen, 205 East Houston St. at Ludlow St.; 212-226-9010; lowereastsideny.com

I would also make time to explore this area, as well as SOHO %26amp; Greenwich Village. I would recommend the area around Bleecker %26amp; MacDougal Street, lots of bars, cafes, music venues, you will enjoy it. Try Cafe Wha, www.cafewha.com and The Comedy Cellar, www.comedycellar.com, for some cool entertainment in this area.

Having just recently been at The Cloisters, I would recommend a visit - it was a very nice place in a beautiful setting. Admission here is suggested, and as it is part of the Met, the admission is good for both.

    NyCGirl thanks a lot!

That was just what I needed! We%26#39;ll try to see it all!

Post New York Marathon Advice (Eating and Drinking)

Following on from my earlier request. After I complete the New York Marathon (I am relatively confident I will at least finish) I want to have a big blow out i.e. eat and drink plenty. Therefore any recommendations for places to go for the following would be gratefully received:

    1) Burgers/Shakes

    2) Burritos

    3) Pizza

    4) Beer with a view/impact (i.e. bar at the top of a building or at a bar I will never forget)

There%26#39;s an official after-race-party at Copacabana:

    ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/postrace.php

    No food, though.

I think it will be best to shower down first, other diners/drinkers could be put off by the smell of running 26 miles!

As for Budget, not sure was assuming that all the food groups I was after we relatively cheap, as for the price of a drink or two, unlimited....

If you want a Mexican party atmosphere, check these out:

    Caliente Cab Company

    Senor Swanky%26#39;s

Gonzalez y Gonzalez (look for the giant, electric sombrero!)

These places don%26#39;t get the greatest reviews because they focus on partying rather than fine food. The frozen margaritas flow all night and the food is big!

All are located in Greenwich Village.

    Carriage Ride in Central Park

Where do we go to get a Horse drawn Carriage ride in Central Park

    Carriage Ride in Central Park

They are usually all lined up along Central Park South near the gates of the park (right at the edge of the corner of 5th Ave, very near the Plaza). If you do a search for carriage rides loads of threads will come up with peoples opinions on the rides.

    Carriage Ride in Central Park

The south of Central Park on 59th street is where the Horse drawn carriages line up to take people through the park. There are always more carriages than demand so you should have no trouble getting one. An interesting thing (I mention it as you%26#39;re from Limerick!) is that a lot of the guys who drive the carriages tend to be from Ireland so you might have some interesting conversations along the way! Enjoy!

Note that trips are short, may be worth negotiating longer trip. Avg $40 for about what feels like 1/2 mile. But it is nice!

Hand luggage restrictions flying out of JFK

    Hi.

Uk airports have reduced some of the restrictions on items that can be carried in the hold. Can anyone tell me what the situation is flying out of JFK to Heathrow?

I want to be able to carry my electronic car key fob, digital camera and mobile phone in my hand baggage. What about solid lipstick and pens btw?

    Thanks.

Hand luggage restrictions flying out of JFK

The US side seems to have been more relaxed throughout than the UK side. I carried a couple of pens, my phone and camera a couple of weeks back no probs but they were stll stopping you taking liquids through to the departure lounges (you could buy once you were in there tho). Can%26#39;t help with the car key fob tho.

Hand luggage restrictions flying out of JFK

    Hi.

Thanks a lot for replying - things do seem to be settling down, although I don%26#39;t mind the extra security at all, it%26#39;s my car keys I%26#39;m most worried about - I can live without buying any cosmetics, etc. But I am worried about having to put the car keys in the hold in case they get lost or stolen. (Especially as I%26#39;ll have to either leave the case unlocked or put the special TSA approved locks on that can be opened.)

    Hi

I%26#39;m in New York next month and may do some christmas shopping.

As a guide can anyone tell me the prices of an Apple Ipod Video in New York?

Just wondering if (and how much less) I would save a lot buying in The US and would It be covered with a warranty on my return to the UK?

    Thanks in advance.

Cost of Ipods in New York.

I dont know specific cost of the video model, but maybe you can judge any cost differnce based on these models? (that I just priced out because I just bought one for daughter).

The ipod shuffle is currently selling for $69,

and the ipod nano is currently selling for $149.

and the 20g. is selling for $299

(fyi.. I%26#39;ve had one for a while now and I really havent found ANY price differences between buying directly at apple store or any other local stores.. prices are pretty standard in US, not sure about UK.

Cost of Ipods in New York.

I bought an Ipod Nano in Duty Free at heathrow from Dixons(or Currys as it now is) for 拢147 (the 8GB version). In the Apple Store in NYC the same thing was $249 which is just about 拢135, but then there will be tax to be added I assume. I checked the prices in various other places as wel, and they were around the same.

  • Christmas

    Hi

Me and my husband are going to New York over Christmas. We intend to visit as many sights as we can - we are there for 4 days.

We would like to vist both ESB and TOPR. Which one would you reccomend doing at evening and which one on a morning?

    Thanks

    Katie

    Christmas

    ESB at night

    TOTR - day

However, it it great to go to TOTR for day, dusk %26amp; night views, just spectacular.

    Christmas

Be flexible... Await to see what the weather conditions and visiblitiy are ... ideally, on clear blue sky days that%26#39;s when you want to head up! Weather is variable at this time of year and we can have low clouds limiting the view.

Both are great with wonderful landmarks nearby. I would recommend TOPR for evening so you can watch day turn into night and get better photos of the EmpireState Building lit up!

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island questions

It would work out better for us to visit the Statue of Liberty %26amp; Ellis Island on the week-end, but wonder if it%26#39;s much more crowded then than it would be on Monday. Also, is it really necessary to arrive 2 hours before your scheduled tour time for the ferry, as the recorded message says or would 1 hour be sufficient? 1 more question - would taking the Staten Island Ferry another time just for sight-seeing be redundant with this ferry trip? This will be our 1st NY trip, leaving on 10/20, %26amp; need some answers. Any good moderately-priced general food restaurant suggestions would also be appreciated.

Statue of Liberty %26amp; Ellis Island questions

The Staten Island Ferry would definetley be redundant.

As to the crowds on Sat vs weekday, I don%26#39;t know for sure but I would expect as much. I%26#39;ve only done it during the summer with my kids

Statue of Liberty %26amp; Ellis Island questions

Yes, show up 2 hours early. The people watching is very good, so you won%26#39;t be bored.

To help you with other questions, we need to know more about you. When will you be visiting? How long? Who is in your party? Wheat else do you want to see? What%26#39;s your food prefernces and budgets?

You might want to post these as separate posts.

If you had a week here and really like being on the water, I%26#39;d say add the Staten Island ferry or a Circle Line ride.

What about the Sat. vs. Mon. crowd question?

We are a couple in our 60%26#39;s, arriving on Fri. 10/20 around 1pm %26amp; leaving Tues. evening, 10/24 around 6 pm. We%26#39;re staying in mid-town, plan to visit downtown %26amp; uptown %26amp; like American, Italian %26amp; Chinese food. Wondering if it%26#39;s feasible to have a decent ala carte dinner for $50/60 a couple (not really drinkers).

When I phoned to ask about the timed monument passes, the very nice lady I spoke with told me to arrive 1 1/2 hrs. prior to the tour time, except for the first one to just arrive at 8am.

While I don%26#39;t know for certain having not been on the trip for some time, I%26#39;d say it would be a lot less crowded on a weekday. Given the length of your stay, you could do this trip on the Monday. On any day, if you take the first ferry of the morning, you don%26#39;t need to be there so far in advance. I think the first ferry is 8:30 and you can get there at 7:30-7:45. You only need tickets/reservation in advance if you want one of the tours on Liberty Island (for the SOL). People have been reporting that the line to pick up prebooked tickets has actually been longer than the line to purchase tickets on the day. ;)

You can certainly find dinners for $50-60 couple for food, especially if you don%26#39;t order all 3 courses (app., entree, dessert). But once tax (~8%) is added and then tip (double the amount of the tax for a 16% top) it could be closer to $70 unless you%26#39;re careful.

There are lots of restaurants with entrees for $15-25. What gets pricey are the drinks or if you start adding on pricey appetizers. It%26#39;s not uncommon for people to share appetizers.

Do you know about menupages.com? YOu can search for rest. by area, by type of food and see reviews and menus (most with prices).

There are also some great prix fixe dinner deals.

Maria Pia is an Italian restaurant in the Times Square area that does a $21.95 prix fixe dinner (3 courses) with good choices.

Basilica is an Italian on 9th ave. that%26#39;s good and affordable. Their entrees are mostly under $15.

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

It%26#39;s usually easy to eat Chinese inexpensively. Kitchen 22 is very good American food with a prix fixe $29 meal.

    http://charliepalmer.com/kitchen_22/home.html

Re: restaurants... if you%26#39;re going to be down at Battery Park I%26#39;d recommend that you stop by Fraunces Tavern (end of Broad St. and New York Plaza) if you don%26#39;t already have that on your list of things to do. It%26#39;s the oldest pub in NYC (although some other establishments argue that point) and supposedly George Washington and other revolutionaries ate there. The food%26#39;s not great, but the atmosphere is very neat if you%26#39;re looking for a touch of old new york right in the heart of wall street.

Why come all this way and chance missing your tickets? Don%26#39;t underestimate how much time it takes to get from one place to other... getting to boat line is a bit of a walk. Tons to see even in Battery Park to the ramp including WTC sphere upon which both towers fell and the eternal flame.

Enjoy all the city has to offer, the people watching and street entertainment is OFF the charts. Street vendors will be lined up on walkways...take a moment to enjoy viewing their wares, photographs, etc.

The Statue is ALWAYS crowded because people from around the come to the U.S.A. to see this wonder and all she represents. The diversity of those in line will amaze you and what wonderful conversations and engagements I%26#39;ve had! You get to be an ambassador for the U.S.

Food is very expensive at SOL and Ellis... recommend bringing snacks/water even a sandwich. Made a picnic out of one meal. Plus, kids always seem to be busy.

Highly recommend seeing both and getting the headphones. Well worth the price. Just took 2 11-year olds we spent from 8am %26#39;til 5pm touring.

Skip Staten Island Ferry...these boats to get you there will provide closer view. Recommend standing on front right side of boat in early am - photos are great with sun shining on her face and kids will be posed to get her in the background. Enjoy it -- it truly is a wonderful experience.

Visit the website above and print out activity pages for kids. These were wonderful while waiting in line. Even tho you may have a timed ticket to get up inside her, we had to wait 1hr 15 min... Do a bit of family research before hand and don%26#39;t forget to visit the research center at Ellis to see if one of your relatives came thru! Have a great and memorable visit.

    Checking in on line??

We are travelling to Newark from Heathrow and have just about got to grips with the idea of E-tickets..!

Am now trying to figure out checking in on line...

Can some of you better travelled members please tell me how this works??

What about your luggage, how about having your passport checked etc?

I guess the idea is to cut down on queues and it sounds good in theory but Im not convinced!!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

    Annie

    Checking in on line??

Forgot to say flying with BA!!!

    Checking in on line??

I did online check in on my flights in my recent trip. You print off your boarding pass, go to the bag drop counter where they check your bags and your passport and then straight through security. At Heathrow with United it was a bit different to BA, but still saves a long queue at check in.

Annie, basically you%26#39;re getting a boarding pass online which saves time for you (and them). It probably also means you%26#39;re inputting info from your passport in advance. It%26#39;s pretty easy.

It should cut down the long queue. There is a special window with a short line saying something about prior online check-in. Get in it!! I checked in online with BA, saw the much shorter line and went up to it and asked the last guy in line about it and he looked at me like I was nuts, so in panic I grabbed my space back in the long line, then asked 2 authority figures who were keeping the line in check and they told me NO, that short line was not for me. Don%26#39;t listen to anyone. Just get in the short line, lol.

Thanks for asking this question - I am also toying with checking in online with BA for our flight from Manchester to JFK on Wednesday :-)

Something to remember though - according to the BA website, you should only print off your own boarding cards if you%26#39;re absolutely sure your printer will be able to do it to a high quality - because if they aren%26#39;t good quality, you will have to actually PAY to get new ones when you are at the airport!! I%26#39;m not sure whether to risk it...

Whilst I%26#39;m here, does anyone know approx how many hours you need to be at the airport before the flight? I know it%26#39;s usually about three hours - is it any different for flights to the USA?

We checked in online from MAN to JFK ,and chose seats also.

Didn%26#39;t print boarding pass, but no queuing at airport was a refreshing change!!

IOU12 - So did you just go to one of those self service machines to get your boarding passes?

I travel to and from scotland/newark with Continental. I check-in online and pick my seats, then i print my boarding pass. When the on-line check-in was new, yes there was a short queue for those who had checked-in online to drop off their luggage, but guess what, now that lots of people check-in online there are long queues to wait in just to drop off your bags both in Newark and glasgow.

RNnyusa....yes,I kinda guessed this might be something that happened as it got more popular.Guess we%26#39;ll be sticking with the tried and tested way!! Thank you to all that took time out to advise.

    Hershey Sign on Store

    Hi NY Experts

Has anyone ever placed a message on the Hershey store%26#39;s sign please?

    I%26#39;d like to know

if you have to do it in advance (how much notice)

how long it stays up (specific time you have to see it?)

Thinking of putting up a proposal :-)

I was there in Aug. and it costs around 5 bucks. Go to the counter under the staircase to pay and write your message and it stays up for 15 minutes...My kids got a big kick out of this...Make sure you take pictures! hope she says YES!!!

    Hershey Sign on Store

Brilliant thank you sooo much - i hope so too :-)

    Hi again,

just read your reply to my reply on one of your previous posts, (havent been on for a day or two...) yes Grimaldi%26#39;s is the one you are talking about. It%26#39;s just pizza at the end of the day but a really nice one!! I%26#39;ve never seen such queues for pizza before!! the small size is huge!! - plenty for two.

As for the Hershey shop, I meant to do it but forgot at the time!

We had a fantastic meal at Tao Restaurant which i would recommend and advise to book as soon as you know you want to go. we went to book on the thursday and the next available table was 915pm on the sunday night! can be great place for a big group but also great for just the two of you. it was very busy and full of chatter but we still felt it was special enough for the two of us. its v dark in there so eat plenty of carrots before you go!!

My hubby suggested changing the car so I said he could choose whateve he wants if i could choose where we go on holiday next year! and he fell for it!!! Have a great time.

ohhh good luck!!! hope its a yes!

You may need a strategy to keep your GF occupied wlile you go into Hershey%26#39;s to arrange the message. If you%26#39;re going with other people, ask them to whisk her off into a nearby shop until you return.

Here%26#39;s what our message looked like: http://www.footcom.co.uk/nyc/hersheys.htm

Don%26#39;t forget to report back if she says ';Yes';. Here%26#39;s hoping!

    where is the Hershey store?

Sinora, Hershey%26#39;s Times Square is at 48th and Broadway and it%26#39;s website is here: www.hersheys.com/discover/timessquare.asp

  • New York Taxi's

this may sound a daft question but how many people does a taxi carry? There are four of us wanting to get a cab from JFK airport to Manhatten, will we be able to get in one taxi?

    New York Taxi's

There are ';people carrier'; size taxis available. Go to the official rank and the dispatcher will get you on quickly if there are none in the queue. Ignore anyone who approaches you offering you a car, as these are unofficial.

    New York Taxi's

You can seat 3 in the back and one in the front passenger (next to the driver). There are some SUV / Minivan taxis which are bigger.

    taxi boot size

Hi will be travelling to New York on 20th October, 1st visit and really excited, will probably want to buy half of New York up and want to bring 4/5 suit cases there will be 2 adults and 2 children also, and I am worried that the yellow taxi cabs may not fight all of us and 4 cases in , can anyone advise whether or not our stuff will fit, and if not can someone recommend a really good reasonable car hire company, will be arriving at JFK around 13.45 local time, and travelling into midtown manhattan. Thanks very much

    taxi boot size

They have mini-van yellow taxis to accommodate even New York%26#39;s most gluttonous shop-a-holics. When you arrive at JFK, the dispatcher at the front of the line will radio for you if you have a ton of stuff.

    taxi boot size

Thanks so much for that, I take it that the same rates apply for the fare, whether or not I use a standard cab or a yellow mini cab?

Yes, the minivan or SUV cabs cost the same.

  • Is Tea Den a good chinese restaurant?

We are in New York on 22nd and 23rd October, staying in the Sheraton Towers. As it is a whistle-stop tour and we shall no doubt be tired each evening, I am looking for suggestions for good restaurants within walking distance of our hotel, which I believe is on 53rd and 7th.

We all love Chinese -so I was thinking of Tea Den. Is this a good choice?

There are an abundance of Italian/Pasta/Pizza restaurants so I don%26#39;t know where to start. Could any one give me a recommendation?

Also, will I have to book for Sunday/Monday evening for 4 people?

Is Tea Den a good chinese restaurant?

    Ten Den is not bad but I prefer Tang Pavilion 65 W 55th St (btwn 5th %26amp; 6th Ave). Good ramen places are Men Kui Tei 60 W 56th St (btwn 5th %26amp; 6th Ave) and Menchanko Tei 43 W 55th St (btwn 5th %26amp; 6th Ave).

    Check out:menupages.com

As for booking. You probably won%26#39;t need to but it won%26#39;t hurt. If you are heading to a top tier restaurant, definitely book.

  • Halal restaurants/takeaways

    Hi there!

Can anyone tell me if their are any halal restaurants and takeaways in cnetral new york. Im flying out on the 25th Dec and flying back to Engalnd on 1st Jan in the evening.

    Thanx guys!

    Halal restaurants/takeaways

I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by ';central New York';. Do you mean Manhattan? or just midtown Manhattan? There are certainly some halal Indian/Pakistani take out (that is the term we use instead of takeaway) restaurants on Church Street in the area of Chambers Street down by City Hall. I have noticed at least three or four in a very short stretch on both sides of the street.

    Halal restaurants/takeaways

Yes, absolutely! You will have plenty of choices.

    Where are you staying?

In midtown, the most famous one is at 53rd St.and 6th Avenue. They even have a webstie:

    http://www.53rdand6th.com/

In the downtown area (near City Hall and the World Trade Center), most of the Inidan, Pakistani and Middle Eastern take-out places and luncheonettes are Halal.

    Three examples:

Faraj Falafel and Schwarma (has 2 or 3 tables only)

    Bengal Curry

    Pakastani Tea House

    Look them up on www.menupages.com

Chowhound is another good website for finding specific foods

    www.chowhound.com

Also, there are many Halal food carts all over the financial district and lower Manhattan. They usually have a big ';HALAL'; sign on them.

Hopefully, you can open this page:

    www.chowhound.com/search/std鈥?/a>

LOL, this thread below amuses me!

    www.chowhound.com/topics/show/329632鈥?/a>

If you can%26#39;t open it, you need to register at chowhound. Well, it%26#39;s free to sign up, so why not?

Thanx guys, you%26#39;ve both been very helpful! xxxxxxxxx

    Table for 1?

    Hi guys,

I will be travelling over the NY on my own for Thanksgiving. I have already booked a show for thanksgiving day/evening. Altar Boyz at 50th st between 8th and 9th. Can anyone reccommend any restaurants/Dinners (probably the latter) that will accept tables for one on this %26#39;family holiday%26#39; in this area??

    Thanks

    Table for 1?

Either call ahead, or just walk in. If a seat is available, it%26#39;s yours.

    Table for 1?

Most restaurants that are open on Thanksgiving will offer a holiday meal. And you%26#39;re right, it%26#39;ll be mostly families, although lots of tourists are here as well. There are lots of coffee shops and diners that might be open in the tourist areas as well (and for some strange reason, Chinese restaurants always seem to be open on Thanksgiving), but if you want a nice dinner, a place that comes to mind is Beacon, a midtown favorite. They%26#39;re on the expensive side, but they%26#39;ve got a comfortable bar area in the front that would be perfect if you didn%26#39;t want to book a table. I%26#39;d suggest reserving a table though, I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;d accept a single reservations.

    Hi Sara!

Altar Boyz is a great show - you will really enjoy it. Actually, 2 of my favorite places to eat in that area are right around the corner! I often use them as pre-theater dinner spots. You should check out Eatery (www.eaterynyc.com) and Vynl (vynl-nyc.com). They both are delish -and affordable! I am not sure if they take reservations - but give them a call...and if they don%26#39;t I wouldnt be too worried - I don%26#39;t think you will have an issue getting a table.

    Have fun!

Thanks guys, at least i know i wont starve now! :o)
