Looking for workshops in NYC

Hi,

I will spend a week on NYC in October, it will be my second time there. Now that I have seen the major tourist attractions, I am looking for alternative things to do. Do you know something about interesting Workshops where I can register?

I%26#39;m interested in arts %26amp; literature in general (specially on writing), but I do not have any special requirements, just looking for cool thinks to do, something like: creative writing, cooking, photography, or whatever鈥?/p>

Last year, I went to Vienna, and wondering around the city at midnight I came upon this place, it was the ground level of a building, all the doors were open and I heard people laughing. When I approached and picked inside, I saw this immense kitchen, they where having a cooking workshop, and apparently a lot of fun. I found it very interesting that people would gather that late in the night in a week day for a cooking workshop.

That%26#39;s the kind of spirit that I%26#39;m looking for.

Thanks,

Ivo

The New York Public Library offers a variety of programs %26amp; classes, including some writing workshops, most of which are free; the schedule right now is thin, but appreciably more will be scheduled as the fall gets under way:

The well-known International Center of Photography%26#39;s classes are not inexpensive but are excellent; many are multi-week courses, but its offerings include some 1-day and weekend possibilities:

Cooking classes:

http://www.degustibusinc.com - this is the ';school'; at Macy%26#39;s department store in Herald Square

The Learning Annex has all kinds of classes, workshops %26amp; lecture presentations at very reasonable prices:

I%26#39;ve quite enjoyed the wine-tasting classes offered by Morrell%26#39;s in Rockefeller Center... very convivial :-)

Our museums also host learning programs/events which might be of interest to you, but I don%26#39;t know of a central clearing house which compiles all those possibilities.

The 92nd Street Y has great classes, from jewelry and ceramics to drawing and pottery. Most of them are for an extended period of time, but there are several that are one day or a few day workshops only. The teachers and quality of the classes are great. They also offer really interesting lectures here.

For cooking, I absolutely love the Institute of Culinary Education. The classrooms have wonderful equipment and tools and the teachers are very thorough. Best of all, there are so many classes to pick from!

Great advice so far. The Municpal Arts Society has walking tours, lectures and special programs on architecture and history of the city. Here%26#39;s a link to their calendar

All of the museums have lectures, some have concerts. Perhaps pick a museum that interests you and look on their website.

Lots of cooking classes (and also wine events). Here%26#39;s a page with links to different cooking schools

nycvisit.com has a calendar of events that might have some interesting things listed for your dates.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the great pointers, I will definitely try some of these things!

Keep me posted If you find other interesting stuff...

Best,

Ivo

Thanks for you help.

I%26#39;m going on Wednesday, any last-minute tips?

ivo.reduto.freire - the weather is getting blustery! If you are not accustomed to a chill in the air, don%26#39;t foget to bring a hat, scarf, gloves and subglasses. The leaves will be changing color, so make sure you visit Central Park!!

Have a great time!

October 15-21 is National Design Week and the Copper-Hewitt in NYC is celebrating with free admssion.
