when the tours say hop on / hop off does that just mean you can get of at any time and get back on whenever you want? or is there a set time to come back to the bus?
thanks
hop on / hop off
There are designated stops where the buses either drop you off or pick you up. They don%26#39;t wait for you, you do your sightseeing and if you want to get back on a bus, you go back to that designated stop and wait for the next bus. They supposedly run on a schedule, so check this website for pertinent information.

Just got back from NY and did the Hop on Hop off bus tour. It was great once you got the hang of it!! Be SURE you find out exactly where the bus will be stopping to pick people up. When we got off to pop into Macy%26#39;s we went back to where they let us off only to have two buses drive right past us. I finally had to phone the company and find out where the heck we were s%26#39;posed to be!! After that we were experts and as long as we timed ourselves correctly (usually every half hour)(we took the blue bus tour) it was like having our own chaffeur service! Good luck!
HI, thought I%26#39;d ask a question here.... Are the lines long to hop back on?
They can be very long. I remember seeing a huge queue at the ESB and near Battery Park one summer. It%26#39;s something to bear in mind if you%26#39;re waiting for one of the last buses of the day as you might not get on.
I guess it depends on the time of year. We were there last week and there were no line-ups for either bus line. We took the blue busline, but there was a red one also that seemed to have more frequent buses. Most of the time the bus had seats to spare.
We have had a recommendation to use the Grayline hop on/hop off bus tour loops. Does anyone have any recs on Grayline hop on/hop off loops ? Thanks
memphismoe---I did the GrayLine tour a couple of years ago and thought it ws very good. It was my sisters first visit and gave her a great overview of where to go. I particularly liked the Brooklyn and night loops.
...how frequent are the buses?
memphismoe, I was just in NY this past weekend and we did the Gray Line hop-on/hop-off tours and it was great. It seemed the buses came about every 15 minutes, if not more frequently, sometimes we could even see another bus in front of us. We did the all loops two days one. If you order it online you get it for 45 and when you check out you can add 12 hours of free parking per ticket at no charge. There were two of us and we parked all day Sunday and Monday for free. The garage was on 44th st between 8th and 9th aves. so it was very close to both Times Sq. and all the resturaunts on 9th. I would absolutely reccommend Gray Lines.
Keep in mind, though, that these are buses designed for taking a tour, and not for travelling around town in a more general way.
The advice you were given about knowing where the bus stops is important. I work near City Hall park, and when I take a stroll during my meal period I always find lost tourists looking for the bus stop to get back on the hop-on/hop-off bus; apparently, the information the brochure gives is very vague. (Incidentally, it%26#39;s on Park Row, near the gate to the park that is by the fountain...)
