Favourite places to shop in NY city>>>>

Hi all,

Just wondering where people liked to shop in New York city. and why....

I would like to see Macy%26#39;s (mainly because of the movie - original with Maureen Ohara...Christmas movie...Miricle on 34th street)

We are going to NYcity in November.

I would love to hear of other peoples opions on the subject.

Thanks

Macy%26#39;s can be extremely crowded, especially during the holidays, so you may want to plan on going early.

I love to shop in SoHo because most of my favorite stores are right there and there is easy access to the 6, A, C, or R trains. They also have some great places for a bite to eat.

I also enjoy going to Filenes Basement and DSW for shoes in Union square. Great selections and good prices.

I love going to Saks Fifth Avenue especially at Christmas time. The main floor is beautiful.

Pearl River Mart is a good places for gifts (http://www.pearlriver.com/v2/index.html). The gift shop at Museum of Modern Art also has some interesting stuff. I also like to browse (sadly, can%26#39;t afford to buy) at Takashimaya, the Japanese department store on Fifth Avenue.

Macy%26#39;s seems to be a tourist ';must'; but I really find it daunting. It%26#39;s huge, it%26#39;s hard to find things, but they do have big selections AND, for you, there will be an 11% discount if you register at the customer service desk.

I prefer shopping at smaller stores, boutiques and some smaller discount stores. I like Daffy%26#39;s, Loehmann%26#39;s and sometimes Syms.

For unique things, the smaller shops in Soho, Nolita, Tribeca or even the upper east and west sides are fun.

I was recently in the gift shop at the Metropolitan Museum and with an eye toward the folks on this board, looked at the souvenier type items they have. Their selection is AWESOME. Whenever someone asks where to get souveniers and gifts, someone usually mentions the Met Museum gift shop but I think it gets buried in the list. This place has books (both soft and hard cover) on/about NYC and almost every place else you can think of. Calendars, scarves, jewelry (costume and real), totes, T shirts (esp. good ones with that blue hippo for kids). Also things with the Statue of Liberty. I always find good Xmas gifts there.

Another place that%26#39;s got some fun NYC things is Fish%26#39;s Eddy.

Barney%26#39;s is probably my favorite store in NYC. It%26#39;s a great department store with very expensive designer options but also some more reasonable private lable options.

Saks 5th Ave. is also a must see.

I do like the shops in SOHO because there are such choices.

Banana Republic, because they have very reasonably priced things that are well stylized.

The Meat Packing District, 14th Street from 9th Ave west. just some great designer stores including Jeffrey(very expensive but worth seeing)

Century 21, because sometimes after a visit to Barneys and Jeffrey you just want to see something you can actually afford!

I second Century 21. If the Manhattan location is too hectic, there is another on 86th Street in Brooklyn (just take the R train to 86th Street) which also has an across the street annex with housewares and other things in it. The plus of going there is that you can see a little bit of Brooklyn -- a couple of blocks away from that one is a lovely dinner, Hinsch%26#39;s, that you might like. If you prefer the Manhattan location, right in that same area is J%26amp;R, plus a few Starbucks within a couple of blocks of each other, Borders Books, Strand Books, and South Street Seaport. You%26#39;ll also be able to see City Hall Park and if the weather is good, you might want to pick up lunch or whatever and eat there.

wow, thank-you so much everyone!!!!

I never thought of visiting the meat packing district and do not know where SOHO is, but I want to go there,....I have heard alot oabout it. I will peek at all of this in November. I am making plans in the next few weeks to book hotel and air. Thank-you all again. Now I have to look for some cute places to sit and sip a drink and watch passersby....love it!

Takashimaya

Kate%26#39;s Paperie (the one in Soho but there%26#39;s also one next door to Carnegie Hall)

Tiffany

MOMA

Leonidas at Madison and 52nd for Belgian chocolate. They say this store receives chocolate from Belgium once a week.

The bar at Blue Fin in Times Square. (Yes, locals?)

Hi - just wanted to put my bit in for Century 21. We were in NYC for 8 days from NZ and could have spent the whold 8 days there ( we didn%26#39;t oFcourse). It is the best - great tip - we wanted to take small NYC gifts/ souverneirs home for the people we work with - bought a couple at souveneir shops but then discovered that Century 21 has a souveneir department ( basement level i think) we got stuff there for 1/4 the price they were in Times Square. I can%26#39;t wait to get back

Hi again,

We have booked at the Novotel and are very excited now. We are going Nov 16th. Could someone tell me where Century 21 is?

Also, does anyone know when abouts the ice (water to ice that is!)gets poured in Rockefeller Square? I think this is the place we always se on T.V.?

Thanks again.
