Hi.

I%26#39;ve always wanted a real patchwork quilt, but they are horrendously expensive in the UK.

Does anyone know where I can buy one in NYC? If so, how much are they?

If you%26#39;re looking for authentic quilts - stop at the Amish country in Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia). They have beautiful quilts there. You might be able to buy them on line.

You can buy Amish quilts online try www.amishcountrylanes.com. However quilts are notoriously expensive due to the amount of time involved making them. I make them and it takes me about a year to complete one. The Amish ones are generally around $1000+ plus shipping of course. Good luck

I quilt as well and it takes a lot of time to finish one. A lot of department store quilts are made in China so the craftmanship is slightly inferior because they are probably done in a factory environment. One way to know which is made in China is the stitching. Theirs are very large i.e. between 3-6 stitches an inch (real quilters call them ';toe catchers';). The one%26#39;s made by the Amish or real quilters are between 8-12 stitches an inch.

Just something for you to think about when you%26#39;re shopping for quilts.

The quilts at K-Mart and Macy%26#39;s are made in China...mass produced. A real handmade American quilt averages around $1,000.

I%26#39;m sure there are some antique stores and quilt shops in NYC that carry the real thing. Any experts out there know of any???

I%26#39;d love to visit the Amish country, but unfortunately I%26#39;m only going to be in NYC for 4 nights, so a side trip isn%26#39;t possible this time.

I guess I was hoping that there%26#39;d be somewhere in NYC that sold US made quilts and throws, etc. I quite like the mass-produced ones, but we can get the same sort of stuff here in the UK - I%26#39;ve always wanted a genuine US hand-made quilt.

I%26#39;ll just have to start saving up to buy one on-line, (or wait until I can persuade the family into making a trip to Pennsylvania some time soon!)

I%26#39;ve just checked out the quilts on the Macy%26#39;s site - I quite liked the ones they referred to as %26#39;American heirloom%26#39; quality - does anyone know where these are made?

I don%26#39;t know where they are made but they aren%26#39;t made in the USA. If you click on a quilt size as if you were going to order it, some more details pop-up which says ';imported.';

I%26#39;m sure the quilts at Macy%26#39;s and other department stores are made in China and are mass produced. But it will say that they are ';handmade';............. in China. One detail to ask when you are buying a quilt is ';how many stitches per inch?';. You%26#39;re looking for between 8-12 stitches an inch. I%26#39;m a quilter and I know what I%26#39;m talking about. To date, I have made about 80+ quilts.
