Flor de Sol on Greenwich St in Tribeca. Great tapas and hip downtown atmosphere. Not near Penn Sta, but grab a subway dowtown to Franklin St (#1/9) and walk over, then take a cab home.

We will be arriving in 11 days and we are flying into JFK instead of LaGuardia this time. I was wondering if we should specify which route or just leave it up to the driver. Would a car service be better?

I think the prettiest way (though not the most direct for you) would be to take the Belt Parkway up through the Gowanus.

I would just take a yellow cab.

Scenic and route from JFK are kind of mutually exclusive concepts...the route suggested by the previous poster would be the closest thing, but the traffic can get slow and it will cost you more. I would just take the most direct route and call it a day.

Macy's Parade

Grew up on the Upper West Side two blocks from the parade route. Plant yourself on the South East corner of Columbus Circle. That is at 59th Street. As the parade rounds the circle you will have a perfect view. Just make sure you are the one in front. I have always arrived two hours before the start. If you can go to 77th Street and Central Park to see the preparations the night before. It is a sight not to miss.

Get out there early! For front row before 6:00am. Note that the entire length of Central Park West (on the park side) is reserved for Macy%26#39;s employees. Hence, public has only the other side of street.

Highly recommend night before, but since 9/11 they close the door at 10:00 so get there before 9 to walk around the block... Hve fun!

You definitely want to head up to upper Central Park West, just above Columbus Circle.... around 70th Street. This is close to the beginning of the parade. Plan to arrive around 7am if you want to be in front. The parade kicks off at 9am and this is, in my opinion, one of the best areas to watch the parade. Everyone in the parade is excited, fresh and ready to match and are not tired like the would be when they get down to Macy%26#39;s. The only drawback is you won%26#39;t see the Rockettes at this location. Otherwise it%26#39;s a great place to watch the parade and by being at the beginning it%26#39;s over early.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

We will be staying in TImes Square (I hope all of you native NY%26#39;ers realize what fun it is to stay in the middle of the hustle and bustle ot TS when you live in a quiet, rural area-its apparently not for everyone, but we LOVE it!!!)

Can anyone briefly outline the easiest way for us to get to Brooklyn so that we can walk back to Manhatten across the bridge? And when we do get to Brooklyn, what do you recommend we see before coming back across the bridge?

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

The easiest way to get to Brooklyn is to take the subway. From Times Square I would take the #2 or #3 to Clark Street, although there are other lines and station you may use as well. Here is an earlier post I did on this question:

Before coming back, you should stroll around lovely Brooklyn Heights, and see the view from the spectacular Promenade. There are also nice places to eat in the Heights, especially on Montague Street.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

I agree with Greenwhiteblue. Walk the promenade in Brooklyn Heights for sure. ALso consider walking down under the bridge through DUMBO (';Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass';), a funky artsy warehouse neighborhood with furniture stores like West Elm. Go to Jacques Torres chocolate and get some dark chocolate bark and their famolus truffles (you can look up the Brooklyn store online) and walk to a wonderful park that is directly underneath and between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. You can get lunch in that neighborhood, too.

Crazy? Not really. It would sound even less crazy if you were able to take a slightly earlier flight, and then do something besides dinner -- maybe a musical, or a play, or the opera, or a concert, or a cabaret performance. Another possibility (if the weather is fine) is to do a little shopping or window shopping on Fifth Avenue, watch the sun set from the Top of the Rock, do some ice skating at the rink, and have dinner down at Rockefeller Center (I like the Rock Center cafe, although it is not Italian) and then stroll back to the hotel throught he lights of Times Square.

I think it is a wonderful idea! But I agree with GWB that you should do more than dinner, especially on a Saturday night in NYC! A jazz club? A walk through Greenwich Village after dinner? A stroll through Central Park before dinner and a nighcap afterwards? There are a million things to do in conjunction with dinner, but whatever you do I%26#39;m sure your girlfriend will love it!

Don't Vacation in Middletown

My wife and I vacationed for a weekend up in Middletown, NY. Basically, it really is a dreary place. The police are extremely rude and unprofessional. Picture former football stars that aren%26#39;t that bright and need a job. Yea, you just pictured it.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn. Found the front desk a little rude, and the breakfast that is included is a 1 out of 10.

Everything about this area is sad, the people and places are good for a quick laugh, but then you need to stop laughing and quickly drive on.

Chinese: Olli%26#39;s in Times Square is inexpensive, though not the verry best, Grand Sichuan International is good if you like Kung Pao with fresh killed chicken, Wu Liang Ye near Rockefeller Plaza, in the chinatown area Congee Village or the new Chinatown Brasserie might be fun.

Italian- Teenage boys like large portions so you may be good candidates for Carmine%26#39;s or English Is Italian where the food is served family-style. If you want toi try a Mario Batali place Otto is a lot of fun for families, and Lupa a little more refined.

For pizza my favorite is Serafina%26#39;s. There are several in the city, one being on 61st between Madison and Park. I think their pizza is the most like you get in Italy. Eating there always reminds me of being in a piazza in Italy somewhere.

For Chinese I like Mama Buddha, on Hudson and 11th. It%26#39;s not glamorous but very good food, very fresh ingredients and very reasonable.

For Italian there are so many choices.

Do you want a traditional red sauce Italian?

There are high end, northern italian places.

For that I like Beppe.

For a more traditional more southern italian I like Johns of 12th st.

My favorite Italian is Bamontes in Greenpoint/ Williamsburgh. If you want to take a short hop out of the city into Brooklyn this restaurant is amazing.

Also, there%26#39;s a great deli called Arties on Broadway and 83rd which has a great menu and friendly staff.

For lunch, try the upstairs cafe at Fairway Market on Bwy and 75th. Not the fanciest but the food is excellent. Love the chicken soup on a cold day.

First time to NYC

I am traveling from Baltimore. We wish to visit NYC. Train ticket is about $170 each. We would be willing to drive but, don%26#39;t know about the dificulity with traffic (weekend) and parking. Could use some advice regarding best (cheapest) way to get there, lodging for one night and sightseeing.

Got some questions for you. Have you looked into flying from Washington, D.C. to LGA? Amtrak is typically not the cheapest, especially if there are airline specials.

BTW, alas, why only one night? That%26#39;s too bad. But, if you really only have one night, I would look into Site59. It%26#39;s a last-minute travel-package website, especially for short trips. I%26#39;ve gotten wonderful deals for air+hotel and air+car. (You must book at least two components.)

Have you considered traveling by bus? It is much cheaper, and barring an accident, the same time that Amtrak takes.

AMtrak is easy and relaxing but not all that cheap...on the other hand, it gets you right into midtown no fuss no muss no get there early security blah blah stuff which is great if you have only one day...whereas if you fly you need to get to the airport in DC, in advance, on the plane, into the city from LGA or JFK....which makes the trip just as long as the train, no cheaper and a pain in the neck. If you want to drive, you can park your car in a commercial lot for less than your two train tickets! But getting into NYc by car is not for the faint-hearted. FInally, if you really want to come cheaply on the bus, try fung wah bus company online. They recently got a bad rep for a bus accident, but they are cheap cheap cheap and I think they do a ny-dc run.

1. Walk east on Fulton Street (the north exit of your hotel) until it ends and you%26#39;ll hit South Street Seaport. This are has very old cobblestone streets, tall ships, some historical sites and a mall!

There are a few restaurants and bars that stay open late. No matter which you choose, you get great views of the Brooklyn Bridge! You%26#39;re practically under it.

2. Walk west on Liberty Street (one street south of your hotel), past the WTC site and through the World Financial Center. You%26#39;ll get to the Hudson River/Battery Park City walkway.

Walk all the way to the water to get to the path. Look to your right and you can see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Liberty State Park. Walk south and you can go all the way to the tip of Manhattan.

Some streets will seem kinda dead and closed down, but they are not dangerous.

I beleive that Southwest NY, a restaurant in the North Cove marina, serves dinner late. Lovely setting.

Affinia Dumont-safe neighborhood?

Okay last minute craziness has set in. I am thinking of changing our hotel to the Affinia Dumont on E 34th St between Lexington and 3rd Ave. Just wondering if this is safe neighborhood. It is just me and my daughter (14) traveling together and I guess I am just getting a little nervous before we leave. The hotel looks wonderful and has gotten excellent reviews. Thanks!

Kitty, I found the price of $299 a night for the first two nights and then a little more for the last three. I found it on quikbook.com and then I went to the Affinia website and also found that they had the same prices. I thought these were pretty good prices. I have now switched hotels for the 3rd time in 2 days. I am very happy with my final decision. Hope you find a good price, it sounds like this will be a good choice for us.

The Dumont is a great hotel. We stayed in a room almost at the top and it was a fantastic view. The room was very large. As you turn right out of the hotel you come to a lovely area with many restaurants. We found this an excellent place to stay. Enjoy!

It%26#39;s a good neighborhood, and convenient, too. You%26#39;ve got the #6 local Lexington line around the corner (Park Ave. at 33rd St.). The uptown side will take you one stop to Grand Central, where you can make connections to the west side. But you%26#39;re close enough to just walk up to Grand Central if you like. It%26#39;s also an easy walk down Park Ave. to Union Square, a young area that your daughter should like. Lots of shopping geared to the college-aged crowd (it%26#39;s just near NYU). If you don%26#39;t feel like walking, just take the downtown #6 to Union Square (three stops).

Only $15 one way. Use it all the time and it%26#39;s great and always reliable. Very easy to find when you exit the terminals. They are outside every door and you can buy your ticket right there on the curb.

I just booked the one mickey recommended $17 each one way but I arrive at 9pm so thought it was th safest way and we get dropped off at hotel and then collected again on day of return. Virgin charge 拢12.50 each way for return transfers so dont think $17 is bad very good.

I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Newark airport to our hotel, Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square.

We arrive at Newark at 1.30pm so allowing for customs and baggage probably leaving there approx 3pm, is this reasonable?

What is the best way to get to our hotel. As there are 3 of us I%26#39;m not sure if the train would be much cheaper than a cab, although would a cab take much longer due to traffic?

Cab will run ~$50-$70 ($45 base plus tolls/tips) and likely to get stuck in tunnel traffic.

Easiest way catch AIRTRAN MONORAIL to PENN STATION NYC @$15 each. Most direct depending upon time of day. Cabs likely to be backed up in tunnel traffic.

During weekdays, from airport to NYC is ~1 hour (don%26#39;t forget to add up the 5 minutes to buy ticket, 10 min wait for train, 10 min walk to platform)

Once at PennStation NYC, hop a cab. Cost ~$5-8

Travel here is always about timing -- rush hour? weekday vs. weekend? and of course luck!

Newark to Manhattan

If it%26#39;s a weekday,take a cab or a car service-the train is great if there%26#39;s only one of you but it is a hassle and would cost as much and the trains don%26#39;t run one after another-they%26#39;re local trains. The bus would be easier than the train-it%26#39;s $12 and goes to Port Authority which is only a few blocks from your hotel.

The Hilton is a full-service hotel and the Affinia is an apartment. I%26#39;d go with the apt. so I wouldn%26#39;t have to eat all my meals out, plus there%26#39;s loads more room. But if you want the amenities of a hotel, like room service, go with the Hilton. And, even though the Hilton TS is new and I%26#39;m sure the furnishings are nicer, I%26#39;d go with the New York Hilton -- I much prefer the location. It%26#39;s away from the carnival atmosphere of 42nd Street, and nearer to Central Park. Much nicer.

After the flight I want to get to the hotel as quickly as possible so I always take a taxi.There%26#39;s an official rank just outside arrivals(ignore anyone who approaches you with offers of a ride) and the flat fare is $45--- with tolls and tip it should be about $60. Not the cheapest option, but the one I always take.

Even though it is slightly more expensive I would grab a taxi - it is safer and quicker as you don%26#39;t have to drop anyone else off before you get to your hotel. I have been with my daughter for the last two years and we are going again this year. For the extra 10 dollars it is worth it.

Film-fan/Foodie coming to NYC for Christmas

I am a major movie buff since I was a little girl, and I like old movies (from the 1930s, 40s, 50s etc), so I have been longing to go to NYC my whole life, having seen so much of it in the movies. I enjoyed the previous posts about what movies to watch before coming. However, I was wondering if anyone knows about any tours of NYC that focus on famous sets or sites from the movies?

Also, I am a foodie -- love to cook as much as I enjoy eating the food -- but I don%26#39;t have much money (I work for a non-profit). I plan on one really nice restaurant, and the rest of the time more reasonably-priced fare. There%26#39;s not much that I don%26#39;t like or won%26#39;t eat. What are your suggestions? It would be great if there was a tie-in between the movies and the restaurant... like ';21';, or The Russian Tea Room (from ';Tootsie';), etc.

Also, since I will be there Christmas week, what should I be sure to see/do that is special or unique at Christmas?

Speaking to the ';foodie'; part of you, did you know that some of the cookings shows - Mario Battali, Emeril - and a few others are actually filmed here in NY. I haven%26#39;t done it yet myself but I think you can go to the Food TV website to request tickets.

Bobby Flay has a restaurant in the City on 5th Ave. between 15th %26amp; 16thStreets. Lidia%26#39;s is Becco on Restaurant Row and Mario has 2 places in the Village, Babo and PO. One day we were able to get into PO (without a reservation) and had lunch. It was great and if I remember correctly it was about $50.00 for the two of us (with wine).

For very reasonably priced food, Chinatown is a must. I especially like Tea Lunch.

Another tip is go to www.restaurant.com If you want to go to John%26#39;s for Pizza they have a Dining Certificate you can purchase and print on line. I just checked and currently it%26#39;s a $10.00 cert. that cost only $3.00. You can check out restaurants by neighborhood and then I suggest you go to www.menupages.com to see if anyone has given a review - or ask here! I know it%26#39;s not a huge amount but when you are on a budget every little bit helps. Probably the best way to do this is to have your itinerary planned and then you will know what neighborhood to explore for restaurants.

You will probably pass it on your Movie Tour, but Katz%26#39;s Deli is the place where Meg Ryan did her famous scene from When Harry Met Sally - the woman at the next table, when asked for her order said ';I%26#39;ll have what she%26#39;s having';. The sandwiches there are huge, enough for two. If you need more, just get a knish and, of course, cream soda.

I%26#39;m that that much of a movie buff like you, but I certainly am a ';foodie';. I%26#39;m not a baker buy you might be and there is a great store that has everythin any baker could want. I think it%26#39;s on 22nd Street. If you are interested in going there I can check it out and give you the exact address.

The biggest suggestion I can give is you can try some of the best rest. in the city if you go for lunch. Many have prix fixe lunches for $20-30/person (not including wine). If you%26#39;re a foodie, I%26#39;d invest in a Zagat guide. They list all the prix fixe places, reviews etc. You can join on line for a limited time or buy a ';hard copy'; guide. I%26#39;d personally do the latter.

chowhound.com and egullet.com are 2 ';foodie'; websites if you want to peruse what and where the foodies are going.

I second the Katz%26#39;s deli rec...very funny fake ';o'; scene was filmed there with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. There is Serendipity 3 where a scene in the film Serendipity was filmed.

Russian Tea Room, sadly, is gone. There%26#39;s Monk%26#39;s Restaurant from Seinfeld, that would be affordable.

Try the Central Park cell phone walking tour from Flex Tours at www.flextours.net. I took it and learned about some of the places in Central Park where movies where filmed. The tour was great.

j.k.r - get yrslef a %26#39;popup%26#39; map - little grey hard backed pop up map (they do them of every city can get them at airport or ebay for cheaper-they have a pen and a compass on the spine not that you will use it!) Im about to go to NYC for the sixth time this xmas but I STILL take mine with me, its got all the sightseeing places marked on as well as a mini subway map on other side. Plus its only small and discreet so you don%26#39;t look a complete idiot tourist when you get on the subway/stand on a street corner decideing where you are. particularly good if you find yourself in a dodgy area at a bad time of night and need an escape route lol ; - )

I like my Streetwise maps - they are laminated and show just about everything. You can get an All-Manhattan one which I woudn%26#39;t recommend because everything will be really tiny, or separate ones of different sections.

Chris---those of us who went to the Cloisters recently all bought a copy of that book, including NYCgirl. It%26#39;s really handy and was great when we went for our walk in Brooklyn too.

Since your in the UK, Waterstones has a Pop Up Map (that someone else has already mentioned) its 拢3.99 and it folds out and has all the attractions marked on it. Im not sure if it has bars and restaurants on it though. But its a really good little map to plan your days with because you can see where each attraction is. Im going to buy one for my trip.

March, April or May?

Hi, I have a big birthday next year so have decided to treat myself to a trip of a lifetime.

If you had the choice would you visit New York in March, April or May. I would choose March only because it%26#39;s nearer but that%26#39;s just %26#39;cos I can%26#39;t wait.

Also would you stay near Times Square or elsewhere. All hints and tips welcome. Just at the planning stage at the moment but a %26#39;must do%26#39; is a helicopter trip - looking into that when I have booked.

March, April or May?

If money is a factor March and April flights will be cheaper (particular March). However, March is a lot colder. May is a nice time, warmer weather but not too warm.

Invest in a good guide book - it%26#39;ll be a godsend cause everyone likes different things.

Personally I prefer to stay out of the Time Square area cause it%26#39;s so busy, some people, however like this. If you want a quieter area with nice bars/restaurants consider the Upper West Side or Greenwich Village (my personal fav). I stayed here www.west-eleventh.com on my honeymoon last year and really enjoyed it - it%26#39;s not a hotel but an apartment in Greenwich Village.

The main thing to remember is wherever you stay in Manhattan as long as you are near a subway stop you are never far from anywhere :)

March, April or May?

Of those 3 I%26#39;d choose May as for me the longer the daylight hours the better. Times Square although very handy for transport, is too busy for me (although it%26#39;s fun to pass through). I prefer a quieter neighbourhood and choose the Upper West Side.

I went in May this year for 4 nights. 2 of those days we had down pours non stop and had to cancel r helicopter trip! Think we were a bit unlucky. The other 2 days were lovely and warm though. The rain didnt spoil the hol (its impossible not to have a fab time no matter what weather) but we were disappointed about the helicopter trip.

Anyway ive booked again for next year and decided to book in april, flights r cheaper and after the weather we had in May there r no guarantees. Either month u will have a great time though!

I have booked my trip for March next year. But thats because its my boyfriends birthday then and I tell him we are going for his birthday (but really its just because I couldnt wait any longer to go back, heh). Im not sure what the weather will be like then, but we got a good price so its all good.

Im going to be staying at a hotel on the UWS, which Im looking forward to as it I have heard its a really nice area. Im not sure I would like to be right in the middle of Times Square, plus being on the UWS encourages me to see an area I probably wouldnt see if I was staying in Times Square.

I went on a helicopter trip with Liberty Helicopters on my trip 2 years ago. I would definetley book ahead, we waited for a long time before we went up and there was only a couple of groups ahead of us. Its worth it though, just remember to take your camera and make sure you can switch the flash off, otherwise you just get pictures of your reflection.

Is it feasible to do Central Park, visit Madison Square Garden, and then go see Hairspray at night? I will be in New York from noon until 9am the next day.

Central Park and Hairspray in one day is very feasible. They are about a mile away from each other (just to the park%26#39;s entrance, and of course, Central Park extends way beyond that.)

Just curious, what do you want to see in Madison Square Garden? It%26#39;s a sports arena, but not that exciting when there%26#39;s no game being played. Anything specific?

You%26#39;re in the right place to get information. This website (especially this forum) has been really helpful. I%26#39;m sure some others will be along to give you some great suggestions.

Take a look at the hotel reviews and come up with a 3-4 hotels in your price range and let people know generally what you want to do and what you are interested in and your age range and they will weigh in with an opinion the different properties.

Also you can do a search on kayak.com to see what fits your price range and then come back and ask people%26#39;s opinion.

Whatever you do, stay away from WooGo. I stayed at this particular ';hotel'; in April (it was called the Imperial Court back then) and it%26#39;s a complete dump. I wrote a review that was posted in mid-April ... check it out if you like. The subject line was ';Avoid at all costs.';

All the stores have their decorations up by Thanksgiving (Nov. 23). The Rockefeller Center tree isn%26#39;t lit until the following week.

I find it very Christmassy in the residential neighborhoods the day after Thanksgiving, when you%26#39;ll see Christmas trees lined up for sale. I just like the smell.

The famous Macy%26#39;s windows will be unveiled the evening of November 19...so a few days before Thanksgiving. Not sure about the other stores.

You aren%26#39;t going to find any discounts for this show as it is extremely popular (and for good reasons!). Other posters who had concerns about shipping tickets out of the country solved that problem by either having the tickets emailed to them or by arranging to pick them up at the theater box office.

You%26#39;re welcome, Nikki. If you can get orchestra seats that is the best for optimum viewing. We were in Row J and they were fantastic seats--but they sure did cost!

I should add--if you can get seats in the center rather than off to the side--even better.

We had row x main floor which was partial view because of the balcony overhang, but it really did not hinder our enjoyment of the show...It is a great show and my tickets were only 76.00, but that was before they won all the tonys. I bought them from telecharge. The theater is small and the sound system is fantastic. My 2 younger sons were given ';booster seats'; so they were at adult level and we all enjoyed it immensly...When it comes to chicago next Oct. I will definitely see it again. You will love it!

There are all kinds of standard hotels on Route 9. I like the Holiday Inn Express that%26#39;s at the corner of Sharon and Rte. 9. There%26#39;s also a Best Western, a Courtyard, and a Residence Inn all within a couple of miles on Route 9. Be aware that the Courtyard, even after its renovation, has a very damp sensation and moldy odor in the rooms. I quit staying there because of that problem. I have friends who really like the Residence Inn.

The Holiday Inn Express is a nice basic hotel and the staff is exemplary. Also, you get better rates on the Priority Club website than you will get over the phone (normally) and if you%26#39;re 50 join AARP and you get even better rates.

I can%26#39;t believe no one responded to your question! Poughkeepsie is a busy, active community. I love it there. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express just a few weeks ago when we went to a West Point game (my son may go there next year). Be aware that any time there%26#39;s an event going on at the colleges (Vassar, Culinary Institute of America, Marist College) that it is very, very difficult to get a room reserved, so make plans early.

I don%26#39;t know of anything like that in the area. You might check at the colleges and she if they ahve any kind of student housing renting for short timer periods. Otherwise, there are some cheap hotels in the area. Of course, your post is so old this trip may have already taken place.

I%26#39;m considering a trip to NYC in the next month, we are driving up and was wondering, can we just park on the street somewhere for a couple of days, instead of having to pay for parking in a garage? Thanks

Good luck! I don%26#39;t drive, but my guess is that it takes a graduate degree to decipher our alternate side parking regulations. You%26#39;ve got to move the car to the other side of the street every other morning before 8 a.m., and it can%26#39;t go back until after 11:00. That%26#39;s assuming you have a space in the first place! Sometimes people just sit in their cars for three hours.

You absolutely will NEVER find a spot ';for a couple of days.'; You%26#39;d be lucky to find a spot on the street for 1 day but it can be done depending on where and when. One option is go to iconparking.com and see what they have near where you%26#39;re staying and how much it will cost. Ofcourse, you could also look for their cheapest option wherever it is in Manhattan and then just take transport to your hotel. Where are you staying?

In much of Manhattan, there is alternate side of the street parking

where you can%26#39;t park on Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday for 90 minutes, either from 8;30 to 10 AM or 11:30 to 1 PM,

In other parts of Manhattan the hours for no parking are for three hours from 8 AM to !1 AM or 11 AM to 2 PM on either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday. No alternate side regulations on Wednesday or Saturday - you can park all day.

Example - you are in area where you can%26#39;t park on Monday and Thursday for 90 minutes beginning at 8;30 AM. You park the car at 10 AM on Monday. You don%26#39;t have to move the car until Thursday at 8:30. The closer you try to park after 10 AM the better the chance of getting a parking spot.

Those New Yorkers who do the alternate side dance, and there are many thousands, who must move their can will double park next to a car on the other side of the street. This is not legal but rarely, if ever, will you find such a car has been ticketed for double parking.

Some years back the city decided to ticket these double parkers. There was such an uproar the city backed down. That hasn%26#39;t happened since to my knowledge. .

If I were staying in midtown I would hesitate to look for alternate side parking since it is limited. If I were staying above 72nd Street I would give it a shot if you are staying for a few days.

Just be sure to read the parking signs posted on every street to determine what parking regulations are in effect for that street.,

I have a headache just reading these posts. And I%26#39;m someone who has by necessity had their car in New York innumerable times. Find a garage and don%26#39;t worry about it.

I learned, early on, that you shouldn%26#39;t tell people how to spend their money. The person who posted the note stated clearly he would like to avoid paying a garage for parking. Tell that person the problems encountered looking for a legal spot but don%26#39;t dismiss his desire to save money by telling him to park in a garage. To be useful provide alternatives and on street parking is an alternative however difficult it might be.

But it%26#39;s one thing to find street parking if you%26#39;re driving in from CT or NJ for the day to go to a museum or something - I did that many times, and I would circle the area a couple of times and only go to a garage if I had to - I often got lucky with on-street parking.

One ticket and it will cost more than the garage.

Street parking fior several days will be very difficult in Manhattan, although it would be easier if y ou tried it in one of the other boroughs and then took the subway into town.

Notice that the way to interpret parking signs is to read them from the top downward -- the one on the top of the ';totme pole'; takes precedence, the one underneath applies when the top one is not in effect, and so on.

I don%26#39;t want to hear any nonsense that you did not know that ';No standing'; applied to your car, rather than to people on the sidewalk. ;o)

In Manhattan a car can be parked for 72 hours before it has to be moved. It can be left for 94 hours before moving if it is over a weekend and you are on the Tuesday/Friday side.

If alternate side is canceled on a Friday the car can be left from Tuesday to the following Tuesday at either 10 AM or 1 PM. There are five Friday cancelations iN 2006

rqf, the NYC Traffic Rules say that where there are signs, they must be followed, while in those places in NYC where there are no signs, a non-commercial vehicle may be parked for up to seven days. Where did you find this rule about 72 hours in Manhattan?

In my neighborhood the alternate side parking is in effect Monday and Thursday and Tuesday and Friday from 11:30 to 1 PM. If you park you car on Monday at 1 PM (on the Mon/Thur. side) it does not have to be moved until Thursday at 11:30 AM. It can remain parked for 70 hours and 30 minutes, not 72 hours

I%26#39;m coming to New York to watch my husband run the nyc marathon in a few weeks. I would love to watch him run or finish, but everything I have read said it is a madhouse...any suggestions?

Good luck to him, and good for you for rooting!

One option is to watch him on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. I highly recommend this, but you need to be there early, like 10 AM because you can%26#39;t cross the street once the runners are on the road.

First Avenue is another popular option, especially because this is around ';the wall'; section of the race.

But definitely be there at the end! He%26#39;ll love it and you%26#39;ll love it!

Unlikely you will be able to get to the finish line area, but the east side of Central Park around 72nd St is a nice place to watch. Then you will need to agree on a place to meet. I dont know if NYRRC still has the family reunion area, but that might be a good place to meet.

My daughter and I are travelling to NYC this weekend to see a couple of shows for her 16th birthday. I have never been, although she has with friends. How safe is it to walk to an 8:00 pm show and then back to the hotel afterwards? This is the Broadway and 51st St. area that I am talking about. Should we plan on getting a taxi? (It is only 2-3 blocks.) Will it be hard to get a cab after the show ?

It is COMPLETELY safe and very enjoyable. NYC is actually quite safe and you%26#39;ll be in the midst of lots and lots of people (and I mean big crowds in the theater district after the shows let out). In fact, I suspect that walking around the area may be the highlight of your visit.

As the previous poster said, it is safe. To go 2 or 3 blocks, a taxi is not necessary. Just note that the area around Times Square is teeming with people--especially after plays get out-- so often walking is slow going.

This was our last full day, so I woke up grumpy. Truth be told, I wake up grumpy most mornings, but the last full day is a good excuse. Off to Cheyenne Diner to meet Lou and Steve for breakfast (this was the last day our 7 day Metropasses were valid, and boy had we got good value from them). I really enjoyed this place in December, but it didn鈥檛 seem to have the same appeal this time. For a start the server appeared to have brought David鈥檚 and my order, put his plate down and just as he was about to pick up his cutlery, whisked it off the table! It was like the hokey-cokey, it was up, it was down. She took it away, reappearing with the same plates shortly afterwards. Odd. Anyway, when the bill came they had already added the tip. I鈥檒l give them a tip---don鈥檛 mess around with peoples plates!

Back to B %26amp; H as David had a big purchase on his mind. Several hundred dollars lighter, we took the subway to Times Sq to make an appearance on the webcam, and then meandered to Rock Center for a coffee. They had finished the ice by this time and it was lovely to see it so pure, not a mark on it at all. A friend of mine had asked me to bring her something from Bloomingdales so walked up there only to find they didn鈥檛 have what I wanted. Never mind, more UB.

We were going to try for the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset today, so, armed with a couple of the City Walk cards we set off for the 2/3 train to Clark Street. Walk number 48 of Brooklyn Heights was our choice and it was brilliant, helped I have to say by the fabulous weather. This walk ends up on the Esplanade where we sat for a while enjoying the sunshine and quiet. We saw some fabulous buildings and houses on the route, and when I win the lottery鈥︹€?

Grimaldis was on the agenda for something to eat, and after nipping into the forecourt of the River Caf茅 to sneak a couple of pictures we had a delicious HUGE pizza with a couple of well deserved glasses of wine. I had to have something to steady my nerves before venturing out onto the bridge in daylight. The music they played here was brilliant---The Kinks, Free, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin. Anyway, after fortification it was off to the bridge鈥?We set off at 6pm, the clock was showing 77 degrees, what a gorgeous night. The views are something I shall never forget, as is the occasional sighting of the water through the planks when I let my gaze drop. We had the most amazing 45 minutes and it was quite emotional.

Our last night was spent, as a lot of Tuesdays are, at a pub quiz with Lou and Steve. Only difference was this was in an Irish bar on 3rd Ave and 83rd St and we honestly thought we didn鈥檛 have the proverbial cat in hells chance. The start of the quiz was delayed way past it鈥檚 advertised time of 9pm as the Yankees were playing and they were televising the game. The English Invasion ( as our team were called) didn鈥檛 fare too badly and ended up coming 3rd. Really late night for a quiz I can tell you!

Well, this is it folks, our last morning. Breakfasted at Le Pain Quotidien (very tasty apple turnover) . Decided we鈥檇 have a nice leisurely walk in the park to end our stay, and on the way past the Met we saw an artist busy working who also had some prints on sale. A few took our fancy and we put them away t pick up on the way back. There were lots of school groups in the park 鈥揳 few older children doing a PE lesson and a younger group having a nature lesson. It鈥檚 great to see the park being used this way. Spent an hour or two wandering before going back to the artist to pay for the prints. Bought one of the Flatiron for Helen鈥檚 new home she鈥檚 moving into soon. Thankfully, she loves it.

Had a shower and changed, packed and got a taxi back to the airport. Here鈥檚 where the fun starts. The driver asked if we wanted to go on the meter, or go with a fixed fare of $45. I said that I wasn鈥檛 aware that the fixed fare return was in yet, and thought the traffic was pretty light so we let it go on the meter. All the journey he spoke on his cell phone and drove so SLOWLY along the highway in an effort, I鈥檓 sure, to get the meter up. It didn鈥檛 reach $45 by the time we got there, David gave him the minimal tip possible. Obviously miffed, he didn鈥檛 get out of the cab to help us with the bags so David left the boot lid up so he鈥檚 have to. A SkyCap came to his rescue however and shut it for him! Drats鈥?

That鈥檚 it. All done for this trip. If I can twist my beloveds arm we will be back. If I can鈥檛 twist his arm, I鈥檒l be back on my own.

I have since married and moved to Virginia, but I miss the city literally everyday. So, to get my fix, I often lurk on this site. Looks like Joe Torre is staying put...and ARod too for now... WFAN and Mike Francessa called that one wrong. (They actually reported it was a done deal that Joe was out and Lou Piniella was in.)

I am hoping for a Mets v. Tigers world series. I am cheering for Willie Randolph and the Mets which is pretty generous considering I am a Red Sox fan and we are known never to forget...

But there is something fun about his year%26#39;s Mets and quite bizare about the Tigers...by the way they ended their season being so bad and then to pull off these upsets. Gotta love them a bit.

Also, I truly hope Jose Feliciano is brought in to sing the National Anthem for the Mets, that will make everything perfect.

I interviewed him a while ago and he went through such horrible backlash the first time he sang the NA (for the Tigers, so it would be even more appropriate for him to sing it again in a world series between the tow teams.)

Jose is a real NY fan, for both the Yanks and Mets, but before the playoffs started he said he will root for the Mets because they are the underdog.

He told me to this day there is still backlash against him by some people who call him unpatriotic.

I saw Jose and Glen Campbell around that year (1968) performing a few songs for a taping by some old trains at a place called Travel Town in Griffith Park area of Los Angeles. I was in the fourth grade and rooting for Bob Gibson and the Cards in that great series. Remember getting my radio and earplug taken away in class :(

I just read this on the subway website:

7 Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard

Cost: $24, reduced fare $12

Good for unlimited subway and local bus rides until midnight, 7 days from day of first use.

What does reduced fare mean? Does that mean that the 7 day fare is only $12?

If you poke around on the website you%26#39;ll find that the ';reduced fare'; applies to Handicapped and other categories (none of which I or I presume you would fall into). $24 is still pretty darn good.

How much riding around do you plan on doing on each of your days? Since one ride (including transfer) is $2, are you planning on doing MORE than 3 rides a day? If not, just paying $2 each time will be cheaper, or look into the cards that if you buy $10 you get an extra ride (6 rides for the price of 5 - they can be shared between 2 people).

Seniors, 65 or over, are eligible for the reduced fare which is half the regular fare. Visiting seniors will get the reduced fare if they show their Medicare card.

I don%26#39;t know if this applies to visiting foreigners. I didn%26#39;t find an answer at the MTA site

Hey there - any opinions on which is the better hotel in NYC - Affinai 50 or Hilton Times Squares? Thanks!

They are totally different. Hilton TS is right in the middle of Times Square, is a high rise with top floors having some views and has ';regular'; hotel rooms. The Affinia 50 is in a less touristy area but still very central (close to Bloomingdales) and their ';rooms'; are mostly like apartments with small kitchens. Some even have separate bedrooms/sitting rooms. Affinia 50 would be much better with a family, young kids, people who don%26#39;t like crowds.

I used to live in New Jersey and worked in Manhattan - below is what I tell people that asked me about shopping in NYC. There%26#39;s so many places to shop in NYC - below are just suggestions.

Before you go shopping in Chinatown, go first to the Garment district.

Start out by going to Earrings Plaza 1263 Broadway (between 31 %26amp; 32 Streets). This has 2 floors of all costume jewelry starting price of $2.75. This is a great place to get X-mas presents. When you%26#39;re done here - just keep walking down 4 blocks on both sides, make a right or a left on any of the streets and there are ';bodegas'; selling everything you can possibly think of ie silver jewelry, custome jewelry; perfumes, sunglasses, purses, scarves, hats, gloves, etc. Some retailers in Chinatown come here to buy their stuff. You get more discount if you can find someone that has a wholesale license so you don%26#39;t have to pay the NYC taxes.

Garment District (7th Avenue and Broadway from 34th to 42nd Street where you might be able to find some sample sales.

Shoe Street: West 8th Street between University Place and 6th Avenue. More than 30 shops of all shoes – about 3 blocks on each end.

Daffy’s (various locations)

Loehmanns: for designer clothes: 101 Seventh Avenue

H%26amp;M Store (a must): for trendy clothes. Various Locations 34TH Street %26amp; 7th Avenue; 34th Street %26amp; Herald Square; 5th Avenue %26amp; 51st %26amp; 125 West 125th.
